I've seen a lot of people talking about using a virtual machine to open TF2, but most of them fail to realize TF2 needs an actual graphics accelerator to run...and VMs don't offer that (as far as I know). You'll get a Linux distro of choice, get a VM, it'll boot up fine, it'll install steam, but when you try to open TF2....it just won't.

Not when I tried last time, before just outright installing Linux Mint. Even in text mode it requires proper GPU drivers.

There might be a work around, but honestly it would be easier to just install Linux.

I thought they got rid of text mode or made it less lightweight or something.

It's still around and pretty lightweight. People use it to run idlers by the dozens.

Update just hit!

I got my Tux. He goes on your back like a canteen, sits next to it in fact. It has three styles: Normal, which has been shown, Demo, which gives him an eyepatch, and Pyro, which gives him the Pyros mask and penguin versions of his boots.

Also, its adorable.

I've been waiting for a Tux promo since rumours of TF2 on Linux. So excited!

[edit] Though I am a bit disappointed that it is not a hat.

Lil_NathanSo - from someone who has never run Linux before - HOW I GETZ DA PENGUINZ PLOX?

Run Linux.

www.linuxmint.com - Linux Mint 14, what I use, and I personally really like. Ubuntu at its core with a lot of polish.
www.ubuntu.com - Ubuntu, which Valve offically supports. I'm not a fan of its UI personally. Ran it for awhile before moving to Mint.

Theres also Fedora, OpenSUSE, Arch Linux, etc etc but Steam doesn't "offically" support them yet, and would need some small tweaking to work, plus I have no experience with them.

Those are good starting points for beginners, other distros tend to be a bit more advanced. (Debian, Gentoo, Slackware, Arch....)

I installed Ubuntu on a partition days ago in preparation for this. I dunno what's wrong, but I can barely get anything working.

Most of the time my mouse clicks won't work at all. I'll try exiting a window, and it won't work. That leaves the GUI mostly useless. I can still kind of navigate through it with keyboard shortcuts, but even that doesn't work sometimes.

I think most of the issues are tied to a video driver issue, but the fact that whenever I try to update anything it gets stuck trying to contact the update server or whatever and I have no idea if it will ever finish.

I might give it another shot in the next few days, but damn. Not even sure if it's worth it anymore.

Yes. Steam Box is going to be running Linux, so it makes sense for them to release Steam and various games for the operating system.
