#1 A Beginner's Guide to ESEA in TF2 General Discussion

Because we've had a lot of new teams coming into the league lately I think it's time someone wrote a (hopefully) definitive guide to playing in ESEA. In this guide I've covered all the basics:

  • Registering as a team/player
  • Finding scrims through irc
  • League fees and Premium
  • Scheduling on ESEA
  • Connecting to match servers
  • Client issues
  • Playoffs
  • A lot of other stuff!

Let me know what I can improve on since I kind of wrote this off the top of my head. Thanks!

kounterpartsi never understood just not scheduling scrims, the only thing that irc usually has really bad skill differences. the only advantage irc has is that you can get it quick.

I don't know if you've ever led a team or not but it's incredibly frustrating to either have people cancel on you, not be ready in time, or have to leave early from a scrim you've set up. IRC eliminates every one of these problems and the only reason it's not working well for lower level teams right now is because not enough of them are using it.

smobomarketyo anyone wanna stack steel with me so we can get a 1st place badge high im /invite players only DO NOT ASK TO PLAY IF YOU'RE IN OPENNo placement badges for 6v6 below platinum because the skill just isn't there to justify it, and because we found they encouraged sandbagging more than they inspired improvement from newer players. Participation badges and double elimination playoffs are rewards for making it to higher divisions.

Alright man but what's your excuse for no silver 4v4 placement badges? I was so hyped for those.

Ond_kajaGiraffeYour other argument that its something to jump on to avoid splash damage is pretty weak considering how much easier it is to just splash the medic by hitting the rock right next to the fence than it is to hit the medic on the hill/ramp behind it.
My argument is as invalid as yours then, taking down a sniper behind rock is not harder than taking him down from anywhere else on the map, maybe it's your fault that you can't take him down and not the map's.

That's not the argument giraffe was making. The problem with sniper behind the rock is that he can easily see the entire map just by walking back and forth a small distance along the fence. He is also unable to be easily countersniped as he can just walk to the left or right with the rock to block the other side, whereas the other sniper has to rotate across the entire map to get a good shot on him.

Also just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you get personal shitlord.

The sniper sightline from there is good but not as good as people make it out to be. Let the fence stay.I don't think you're talking about the same fence... the small white fence behind the rock does not in anyway affect rushing scouts or soldiers. The only affect it has on the game is makes sniper stronger.
We are talking about the same fence, sorry I don't agree with your opinion.

This might be me being bad but I have never used that fence as medic.

KatsyComangliaGiraffeRemoving the white fence (http://puu.sh/hmSJA/d76b43a001.jpg) behind both of the big middle rocks would go a long way in making sniper more balanced on the map. Probably not used as much in 6s as in highlander, but in hl most snipers are able to sit on the white fence looking over the rock, have great cover, quickly change sight lines to see every entrance to point and be protected by his whole team. The majority if not all of the other sight lines on viaduct force the sniper to be either more isolated and/or more visible. The fence serves no other purpose but making sniper even stronger and would be great to have it gone.
Don't forget the beast that is Heavy that abuses the fuck out of that too.

I'd hate seeing the entire white fence go, I understand it makes sniper horrible to play against though, maybe compromise by shortening the white fence so snipers can only see either left or right not both.

Eh, for once, I think Giraffe has a point. A Sniper who has the cover of their entire team is pretty irritating. Sniper is already strong on koth in general, and it's really not so easy as to "just have the Spy stab him" when there's aware players who press tab and listen in Mumble. Sniper has plenty of other strong spots that they can abuse, they don't need more. :P

I also think a 185 sniper standing there with his heavy behind him is kind of really annoying and would like to see this fixed.

Funny story of coincidental events. This guy was a backup on my hl team of moderate to no skill. Added me back tonight out of the blue asking to mge sniper/scout because nobody else would mge him. I got destroyed (not super suprising but low steel come on). When I saw this I watched the stv (p obvious), asked about it, and he was like "xd xd" and told me that I had no life and was autistic.
