the winners of invite usually also have the best DM.
but everyone knows you also need positioning, movement, teamplay, comms, etc.

what % of power is shooting ability, what % is the rest.

it feels like 30% dm, 70% rest to me. curious what y'all think

Coordination is something made up by aboslute shitters because they couldn't compete with better players so they made "Coordination" to counter them. Shitters ruin everything.

Dm certainly is important and you need it, but tf2 is so dynamic that you can make up for your lack of skill in some aspects by just being better in others.
Though if we're down to the grit I'd say 25%, growing upwards with more confident playstyles // roles where you can take fights purely on being the stronger dm player.

Considering that the only reason the so called "froyo slayer" teams from the Froyo dominance era ever got some rounds off' of Banny's teams was because they were filled with DM apes, I'd say DM counts a lot, but eventually any team that is nothing but great DM will get countered in the mid-long term by teams adapting

I remember old advice on the forums by smzi who said new players should first grind out the mechanics/dm, then once at prem/div1 level start figuring out subtler ways to play and improve.

I didn't like that advice, and that's why i never went above div2.

Personally I would include movement and positioning in DM. Split game skill into 3 categories of deathmatch, knowledge, and teamplay.

Deathmatch is the "execution". Knowledge is "knowing what to do". Teamplay is "Knowing what your teammates do and supporting each other".

All three are used in every play, like imagine a small fight occurs on granary second, 2v2 flank attempts a backcap as rest of combo push into mid 4v2.

Teamplay is the flank on both teams knowing what each will do, and the relative combos also knowing what their flanks are doing. "Do we trade uber as the mid defense? Are the flank winning the 2v2? Are the combo coming back or trusting their flank?"

Knowledge is just knowing the answers to these questions and reacting accordingly. "Yes we trade because we are getting the backcap because they are winning the fight" or "Combo is coming back, we must set up on mid and buy time behind them for spawners since our flank will die soon".

Deathmatch is how these are executed. Winning your fights, hitting your shots and being in the correct position to do these things. Standing on high ground and shooting down making shots easier to hit is good deathmatch. Players who have bad aim but stand in good spots will have better DM than someone who has good aim but stands in bad spots.

This is pretty overly simplified since all three feed into each other seemlessly but the question kinda wants an objective answer and likely all three are equally important for any individual player.

I find that your attitude and mentality is the most important factor to your success in TF2, as it makes you improve DM, teamplay, communication, etc, alot faster.

A bad player with a good attitude will eventually outclass a good player with a bad attitude with enough time and practice.

I think DM is actually UNDERRATED by most top players because they either a) take their own DM for granted once it becomes second nature/muscle memory, or b) play against other people with sick dm and therefore rely more on timing, coordination, map pool etc. to win

The thing is, it's theoretically possible to have godlike dm but be so dumb and antisocial that you can't hack it in invite/prem, but that's omega outlier status. If you grind mge on a class like scout and meet an absolute bare minimum for comms/not feeding your ass off you can play at a decent level.

I'd also add that there are players who are perceived to have succeeded at a high level due mainly to gamesense (like blaze), but still had totally acceptable DM for invite: you'll almost never find an example of someone succeeding at the top of invite with outlier bad DM

if you great dm, can isolate ur fights and have an advantage when you take the fight and can comm this at a basic level you can play top adv low invite off rip solely off the fact you can find important kills. in reality its like 65/35 tho.

Networking is the most important skill in tf2. Almost all advanced+ teams are circlejerks, and they don't pick up players who are not a part of their clique. I have no doubt that there are players who are better than me who have had less success because they don't have the friends I do, and similarly I know there have been people worse than me on better teams for the same reason. It's just the nature of small, team-based esports. I'm pretty okay at the game, and yet I owe almost all of my progress/success to being in a clique of talented friends.

Ironically, ridiculous DM (independent of gamesense) is the one great equalizer here, because the one surefire way to get around networking is to utterly dominate in pugs. DM donkeys can get headhunted by good teams, while brain players need to make their own and build up a core.

Fifteen percent concentrated toxicity he'll secrete,

A hundred percent reason to remember the name (Mike!)

hannahDM matters less on medic compared to the other classes

I’d have to disagree with this as the best medics that I’ve played against had surprisingly great Dm. Try not to confuse dm with only being able to aim. DM in game, is more putting yourself in the position to hit more shots. So basically movement and the anticipation of. Example of a fewZilly, lolguy, meyy. An older example would be Harb
