Cooling is about surface area, so no, a cooler with about 1/4 the surface are won't perform nearly as well.

You can get a single tower 120/140mm if you want something slightly smaller, but don't go below 120mm.

I understand. The noctua nhu14s looks good then (140mm I believe). Cheers.

Edit: I hope that's enough to overclock an 8700k to 5.0. I may just wait until new Intel cpu's though, do you know when those might be?

Yes.

No idea, heat is always an issue with Coffee Lake when not delidded.

Maybe April, maybe later.

Well Nvidia told retailers to sell to gamers not miners so hopefully the prices will stabalize?

You mean like the "don't use GeForce GPUs in datacenters" in the TOS?
Or the "1/2 per customer/household" retailers are already using?

Well let's take a guess if it'll be effective.
Magic 8-Ball says: "Abso-fucking-lutely not."

Hey Setsul, I want to get a 2 TB external HDD to backup my entire PC (I think that's better than using a cloud service like BackBlaze right?)

Is this reliable enough? https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Portable-External-STEA2000400/dp/B00TKFEE5S/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_sims?ie=UTF8 I see reviews of it failing, are there more reliable ones that you recommend or should this be okay?

I would just select my current drives then copy pasting onto the new HDD right?

Ok.
Yes as in you want to overclock or as in you're willing to do it?

You can't really afford Coffe Lake + overclocking so your options are Kaby Lake (7xxx) and no overclocking, Coffee Lake and no overlocking if B/H mobos show up in time or AMD Ryzen and overclocking.

An i3-8100 + B/H mobo or Ryzen 2xxx (e.g. 2400G) are going to be cheaper/better at the same price so if you're lucky those will show up in time.
Also don't get a mobo with only 2 RAM slots when you're already going with only 8GB to stay within budget. You'll regret it when you want to ugprade. I'd also get an SSD.

Some people aren’t OK with AMD so should I go for Intel ?

Neither, wait and see.
If B360/H370 mobos become available get that and an i3-8100 instead, cheaper and as fast as the i5-7500.
If the 2400G becomes available get that, same price as the 1400 but faster and with an iGPU.

Only if both or neither become available then you have to choose.
Otherwise it's obvious. 7500/8100/2400G are faster than the 1400 but the 7500 is more expensive.
With a B360/H370 mobo the 8100 is cheaper than the 7500 and faster than the 1400 (same price). No reason to get the 1400 anymore.
Same reason with the 2400G. Cheaper than the 7500 and faster than the 1400.

Also it doesn't matter if some people aren't ok with AMD, unless you're one of those people.

EDIT: The 2400G is available you just can't select it because no mobos are available yet. The B350 mobo would work but you'd have to somehow update the BIOS.
Also it's 30€ more expensive than the 1400 atm.
Just wait and see.

I had a few questions about a new prospective build

first, i was told some time ago(more likely about 4-5 years ago, my long term memory is is basically nonexistent) that the max amount of RAM you'd really need to run any PC game is 8gb, it seems that that's changed as of recently, as far as I've seen most new AAA pc games seem to have a minimum requirement of 8gb RAM. So I was curious, what would be the optimal amount of RAM for a new build, assuming money's not a big issue? I'm fine with paying more for the best amount of ram, but I'm fairly certain the 128gb maximum RAM most mobo's these days have would be overkill

Also, Seems like the best CPU at this point in time would be the i7 8700k as far as gaming goes, but from what I've seen the i9 7000x series adds a decent amount of performance for a lot of PC titles. Again, assuming money is no issue, Would an i9 be a good choice for a new build, or does is it's performance not have much of a difference from the 8700k?

16gb is the way to go currently concerning ram if you're only gaming/browsing the web since you won't run into any issues with 99% of the games if any at all. Concerning the cpu, since games care alot more about clock speed rather than core count the 8700k keeps up really well with the 7000x, the difference is too minimal between the two to even consider the i9 for the price you're paying(even if price isn't an issue price/performance matters). It's gonna be a long time till games are able to use that many cores effectively to see a bigger performance difference between the two. I'd recommend going for either the 8600k/8700k if this is a gaming build.

i've been looking to build a brand new pc since january and in july i will most likely build it, my budget is around 740$ but i dont wan't to spend all of it so keep that in mind

i'm mostly looking for second opinions since i think i already have my parts picked out, except for my motherboard (and maybe a case)

besides tf2, i don't play that many games, and tf2 is just a passtime for me really so i don't want to spend all my budget on this, although getting a decent enough pc could be nice to maybe play other games in the future

Show Content
ryzen 5 2400g (or a 1500x as a plan B)
seasonic M12II 520 Bronze (might change it although i don't think this matters much)
8gb ram
1tb hdd
+a wifi card
also i will most likely use the cooler that comes with the cpu

also i already have my peripherals although i might want to get a cheap mechanical keyboard

idk if i want to buy a GPU in the future since like i said i don't play that many games besides tf2

honestly as long as i get like 120+ fps constant in tf2 i'll be happy with this

i don't plan to overclock my cpu since i'm too scared to fuck it up and destroy it, so i don't think i would care if my mobo is oc capable or not, also i doubt i would ever need more than 8gb of ram, so 2 ram slots is prob fine for me, and even if i had to upgrade my ram, i'll prob just get separate 8gb stick and keep one of the 4gb sticks (i dont know if that affects performance)

talking about cases, i don't want anything with tacky rgb, i've been mostly looking at the 270r since it looks nice and it's not eye melting

i'm open to the idea of an itx / mini-atx case/board

any help is appreciated

Mini ITX is usually more trouble than it's worth.
Micro ATX with 4 RAM slots, so you can just add 2x4GB instead of having to buy 2x8GB and not being able to use the old RAM anymore, B350 so you can overclock later should you change your mind (also A320 is low end).
You could afford 16GB if you wanted it, but RAM prices should drop later this year so better to wait and only upgrade should you have to.
I'd add an SSD.
You could afford a CPU if you wanted.

You'll have to update the BIOS somehow to get the 2400G to run though. An X470 would be more expensive and B450 won't be released until later this year.
On that note not only X470 is coming (April iirc) but also the rest of the Ryzen 2xxx lineup. No iGPUs but the 2600 or something like that might be interesting regardless. Or simply the 1500X if it drops in price. Since you could afford a GPU it would be an option. Depends on when you want to buy it.

2400G + updating the BIOS somehow is fine too though.

should i worry at all about the bad reviews of the mobo in newegg

also other things i've thought before posting that, i was thinking of getting the ryzen 1600 (non x) but i don't think the extra cores and threads would do that much to tf2 so i went for the 1500x / 2400g

the reason why i gravitated toward the 2400g is because of the igpu, so idk if the 2600 would be interesting to me assuming that, like you said, i wouldnt have a igpu

if i ever want to make upgrades and buy a GPU, it would prob be around christmas, so by then the gpu prices would be a bit better right?

i guess i could ask about GPUs while i'm here, so i'm not really interested about anything above 1080p, also iirc tf2 is a very cpu-dependent game so i dont think getting a good gpu would matter here but, like i said, it would give me the opportunity to play other games in the future when i burn out (which will most likely happen at one point)

smesishould i worry at all about the bad reviews of the mobo in newegg

Do you mean those complaining about the VGA and HDMI output not working with a CPU without an iGPU, those who can't change the BIOS settings because they don't know which key to press or those complaining that motherboards manufactured before the 2400G was released don't have a BIOS version installed that supports while refusing to update it themselves?
FYI https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/2Gen-Ryzen-AM4-System-Bootup.aspx

Yes. Not sure what 2xxx will bring but the 1500X might drop in price or there might be a higher clocked CPU at the same price.

smesithe reason why i gravitated toward the 2400g is because of the igpu, so idk if the 2600 would be interesting to me assuming that, like you said, i wouldnt have a igpu

Depends on the price obviously and it's only interesting because you can afford a discrete GPU.

Hopefully yes, unless mining bullshit happens again.

Yes, what exactly is the question you are trying to ask?

SetsulYes, what exactly is the question you are trying to ask?

gpu recommendations

also the newegg reviews said that a good chunk of those mobos came DOA or they stopped working shortly after but that could just depend on newegg

You could afford a 1050 Ti.

Well no one is going to leave a review "the mobo was not DOA". DOAs happen.

Yo i'm currently looking to build a strong rig that will last me for the next few years and will keep up with future rigs, my budget is around 2.5-3.5k aud.

Main game is ow but i also want to run modern and future big games, i'm looking to overclock and maybe stream as well.

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/PCq8KB
This is the current build I've picked but i'm not 100% confident in the quality of each part, especially the motherboard, case and ram since my current motherboard drivers likes to fuck with my microphone.

On my older pc i have the same ssd and hard drive with windows 10 installed, tried to research if it's worth/possible transferring them into completely new hardware to save some money but i didn't find any decent answer on the matter.

I've also been told that ow is very cpu and ram intensive so i want to make sure that i get good parts for those.

I'm also not sure if i need any extra cooling for something like my gpu.
Thankyou

Onboard sound is shit for microphones. If it's a USB microphone then the mobo doesn't matter and you're just bad at installing drivers. Or Windows 10 is fucking them up for you.

You should reinstall or at least you'll have to reactivate windows (different mobo) but you can reuse both the SSD and HDD. If you get a new SSD then 860 Evo.

Very a very relative term.

No. I mean what do you think those 3 fans on the GPU do?
Fuck Aio liquid coolers for CPUs though.

Thanks for the response, is there anything else in the build that u would replace and if so what would u recommend?

Not really.
Is the mobo a random pick or specific reasons for that one?
Case is your choice.
750W is a bit overkill but aftermarket 1080 Ti + oc'd 8700K will go quite a bit above TDP so 550W might not be ideal either but there are no cheaper equivalent 600/650W PSUs on pcp right now. Maybe https://au.pcpartpicker.com/product/WrNypg/seasonic-focus-plus-gold-650w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-ssr-650fx for 1$ more but nothing actually cheaper.

Sort of randomly picked it, i just looked for the highest rated mobo on the site that was the correct size and supported high ram frequency, is there another mobo that would suit my needs better? I might do a little more research on cases, i'm also swapping fans to the Noctua - NH-D15

I'd really like to build a new pc in the next couple of days because i've been playing on a laptop for the last 3 years and its starting to die a bit. I'm basically only going to be using it for TF2, CSGO and Photoshop (maybe some games like skyrim). No streaming or Overclocking etc. I have little to no knowledge of which components are best so I really need some help. My budget is £750.

Well what are your needs?
And with fans you mean the CPU cooler?

#2820
Flag says USA "£750" says not USA.
How much storage capacity will you need? <250GB, <500GB or >500GB?
