I've had a maxframes TF2 config for a while, and when my fps dropped due to the Halloween 2013 update I assumed this made a high-performance config even more necessary. But today I downloaded an ultra-high quality config just for fun and ran it to see what would happen. I lost ~10 fps.

Why is it that my computer runs only nominally better with fully performance-optimized tf2 than with a high-intensity, full-on version of the game? Is it the game or a sign of my computer not functioning properly? I'm happy to enjoy delicious-looking tf2 at ~120fps but I'd prefer having a much higher stable framerate considering I have a 144hz monitor.

Are you using Chris's fps configs?

You might have an FPS cap on your high performance config (so that you get a stable rate, because the general rule of thumb is once your FPS gets past 110% of your monitor's refresh rate it doesn't matter how high it goes in terms of performance).

tf2 in a nutshell this effin game needs to be optimized, its ridiculous seeing frame drops on such an old game ... i even tried playing at 1024*768 on a i7 computer and i still had frame drops.
its just poor shitty optimization of the tf2 engine, and i agree with you the halloween update made it worse

if you dont get enough frames in a game just say optimization so it looks like it isnt your fault

This may be a stupid thing to say, but when I went from 1920x1080 to 1600x900 my frames went from 180-ish to over 800, stable. You may already be running something like that, but if you aren't, it makes a massive difference, and visually I can't really notice any difference besides the killfeed fonts looking slightly different.

If you have a gpu, changing the DX level can put some of the load on that, increasing your fps. I had 90ish on dx81, and now 120ish on dx 90

I've had similar experiences and I think that, while crappy graphics generally ARE easier to process and display for a system, it's just not always the case. My guess is it's because the engine is currently a hodgepodge of an old design core with a lot of shiny effects taped onto it over the course of almost 10 years.

My current graphics config is the result of hours and hours of trial and error with numerous cvars to squeeze out every frame possible. The result is medium-high-looking settings on dx95 and getting 50-80 FPS. If I were to go to dx81 with chris' maxFPS, I'd lose about 20 FPS, and if i went to regular settings with -autoconfig or something, I'd lose about the same. It's nigh unfathomable, and if you're desperate for frames, the only solution as far as I can tell, is finding out what your system is good at and trying to tweak everything toward that.

Try comparing settings and doing some experimentation using my benchmark demo.

I recently switched to Win 8.1 and lost about 16 avg FPS since my last update there. I'm not sure if it's the OS or the halloween update, but it's possible everyone has suffered a similar penalty after the update.
