City of God (2002) - Brazilian epic crime movie about gangs in the Cidade de Deus suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Not obscure at all but lots of English speakers haven't seen it.
klassyCome and See (1985) - About a Belarussian boy who joins the resistance against the invading Nazi Germany during WW2. No question about it, this is the most creepy, insane and terrifying war-movie I've seen yet.
Seconded. Absolutely.
Lots of people don't know that Belarus lost a higher percentage of its population during WWII than any other country. Belarus lost twenty-five percent of its entire population during the war. Come and See is an absolutely brutal and necessary recreation of what that was really like.

Moon : 2009 : a dude alone on a mining moon base learns about who he is
Event Horizon (1997): warhammer 40k prequel
Network (1976) : an old out of fashion tv host learns he's fired and goes nuts live on air
Also I noticed some of you were fond of french movies. If that is the case then watch the classics from the 60s:
Fantomas : 3 action/comedic movies making fun of james bond
Les tontons flingueurs : a comedy about french organised crime : it is almost mandatory to speak french to appreciate the dialogue
Les barbouzes : a comedy about cold war era spies fighting over some military IP held by the widow of a deceased rich man : it is almost mandatory to speak french to appreciate the dialogue
La folie des grandeurs : a comedy adapted from the theater piece ruy blas
lots of good movies in your posts already. I would add :
Nightcrawler (2014) : a loner becomes a crime scene cameraman for shock tv news
Moon : 2009 : a dude alone on a mining moon base learns about who he is
Event Horizon (1997): warhammer 40k prequel

StylaxThe Spaghetti westerns are known as classics though man.
I agree completely but the first 2 aren't getting nearly as much love as the good the bad and the ugly so I put it there in case someone who read my comment only watched the good the bad and the ugly, from rumors its the best western ever
lootThief (1981) - title
I watched Thief yesterday because of your post, enjoyed it a lot :D
Blaine_8 1/2 by Federico Fellini
My Name is Nobody by Sergio Leone
8 1/2 is considered one of the best movies ever based on some lists I saw, My name is nobody isn't directed by Sergio Leone, it's by Tonino Valerii for those interested, great post though will give some a watch for sure
And from other people's posts I second Moon (2009) which was mentioned a few times, Brother (1997), Dirty Harry (1971), Apocalypto (2006), The Hunt (2012), Leon: The Professional (1994)
I also wanna add:
The Untouchables (1987) - story of a small, non corrupt police unit working to take down Al Capone
The Naked Gun (1988) - comedy about Frank Drebin of the Police Squad whose comedy style reminds me of Top Secret! (1984)
