You seem to have fixed the issue by turning on Caret Browsing, but I highly doubt that was the issue. I'd start by reinstalling your browser, if that doesn't work then I'd revert to an older version as it's probably a bug.

P.S Chrome is trash spyware and Google/Alphabet is the same. Just use Firefox instead.

does firefox still have memory leaks on some computers when you leave it open for 6+ hours or did they finally fix that

I'm uncertain if the memory leak still exists, but it should be patched by now. Either way you are rarely ever going to keep a computer on for 6+ hours straight, so this is a minor issue.

Turn off the middle switch like shown. Had this issue not too long ago on Chrome and did that to fix. I thought it was just shitty CSS a subreddit I was on had.

And before you say that's Opera not Chrome, Opera is Chrome

How is firefox "no better"? FF is at least actually performant and doesn't try to insert trashy features (*cough* WebUSB *cough*), unlike Chrome.

Pocket, Firefox VPN, removing the built in RSS reader, removing extensions on mobile, removing XUL extensions, slowly removing features to customize/harden your browser etc.
