Why don't we have some seasonal skins on all the maps we play the most regularly?
Something like a winter version of sunshine or the snakewater swamp theme and product autumn theme shown in cyanic's Environment's video
Just a little variety here and there that only affects how the map looks and not plays

hmm i thinnk it would create very aesthetically cluttered maps but also tank ur performance to shit, remember cardinal?
im not a mapper so i dont know but i think most people just want a map that runs good and plays good

would be nice if it didn't make your game become a powerpoint presentation

Thought you meant different map pools each season when I saw the title. I think it would be cool if it was done properly, but I think at a competitive level, fps would be a bigger concern. Also, I could imagine so many people saying "Man I'm a Winter Process guy, Summer Process sucks!" which would be annoying.
That doesn't mean I still don't want that night process or medieval gullywash from the environment's video tho...

If we try testing some season-themed maps instead of just speculating, and find out that they only have an fps variance of like 10 fps between them, I think it would be viable

I don't want to play a season where a map possibly causes my computer to go from 60 fps to 10 fps because of all the snow particles. Also don't really want to have to download new maps every season.

Reading your threads makes me wonder if you are trying to save tf2 or kill it even faster

I always thought it'd be potentially more plausible to run an edited map on the stream side rather than the players side, since you can run demos with edited maps (the process one was running on tf2, while the snake had to be run on sfm in that vid)
I don't know anything about stv or how it works so I'm not sure if you can connect to an stv with an edited map, or if there's some hack-y way to do it, but it seems like it might be a lot of work for what is p much an eye-catching gimmick
having said that I'd like to do more reskins

i literally put badlands skybox/lighting for process and got "sunset autumn map"
other than doing this and just changing a few textures around i dont think it would be a bad hit to performance.
map if you want to run about in
pics
i dont see the point in this but i suppose it breaks up seeing the same process over and over again or could be used on stream as mould said.

i like this idea actually but it feels like it would be really hard to enforce unless the leagues are providing the servers

I like the idea but there's some pretty crappy downsides that make it unlikely it'll ever see the light of day. If a mapper were to try to make a seasonal version of a commonly-played map, not only would it take a decent amount of time to reskin an entire map, but you're bound to have some inconsistencies with the 'vanilla' version of the map. It could lead to imbalances, which would just lead to some people complaining about the seasonal map in the rotation. That would only discourage other mappers.
So chances are we'd be with one seasonal variant that people don't want to play and a mapper who spent fuck knows how long on a reskin only for it to be played a handful of times. It's a cool idea, but there's also a reason we have product now instead of the old-school viaduct. Simplicity often beats aesthetics in a competitive setting.

people lost their shit when gully refresh slightly changed the way the lighting on gullywash works. now imagine all the 100s or 1000s of hrs u have on these maps knowing then intuitively by look is gone because theres epic jungle theme to it or some shit. its bad for just being able to play the game comfortably and instinctively

i assumed the idea would be something like season/cup in the summer -> summer map, winter cup -> winter map, and so on. i think this seem like an interesting idea but if the other alternatives are available then people would obviously play whatever they are used to or whatever is the "best" version so the seasonal maps may not be used.
so if the league provides the server they can make sure the current pool of maps on the server agree with what they want to be played.

I just want optimized maps for the best frames. dont need weather effects, reskins, etc.

If ur talking about on the cast side rgl did something similar for April fools and added a whole bunch of stuff on the map

i absolutely love season-shifted maps and stuff, but i would only want it as an option (and i don't think that's even remotely technically possible)

I know Mould has already commented but I will shed some light on the maps you mentioned as well. I did want to put the effort in to make them playable a while ago but these were my reasons for not doing it:
1. In most cases we had to decompile the maps to edit them, which messes with the collision and other things.
2. Those maps don't look nearly as good in game as they do in the video even with high settings.
3. In general we only edited the areas of the map that were in shot, so it was only ever half-done. I think I actually did the whole of product though, but I had to use viaduct pro RC7 because that's the only one that works in SFM.
I can only comment on what we did a while ago, and there are incredibly talented people working on those refresh projects so i don't doubt they could do something like this given the time, but hopefully that sheds some light on many of the difficulties we were having before.

On a similar note does anyone remember the old competitive logos they used to do for the I-Series? I remember either the cap points would be like the tftv logo, or the player would have their logos on their player models. Idk if this would be possible again or even similar to changing a maps texture to create a new theme for spectators/stv but it'd be cool to see again.
