So my psych professor was talking about Autism today and she brought up something that got my thinking. She says that Autism is now measured on a spectrum and a lot of people that seem like normal functioning adults have mild cases of Autism. A lot of the symptoms with Autism seem to be those of introverts. It seems weird to me that the spectrum considers introverts to be borderline Autistic. What are your guys' thoughts on this?
As the spectrum fades it seems to me like they are just diagnosing the masses with it, it seems sort of like ADD or ADHD, where like EVERYONE has it, when really it was just the way they grew up or were raised.

There are different kinds of intelligence, social intelligence is one of them
being introverted and having low social intelligence are very different
someone who is introverted probably has good social skills, but does not like to spend a lot of time with other people. Someone on the autism spectrum would probably spend the majority of their time alone due to social interactions making them uncomfortable, so they avoid it, I don't know if that makes them "introverted"

its also worth mentioning that there are very few FULL introverts and FULL extroverts, introversion and extroversion come on a spectrum and most people lie in between the two.
I am on the high-functioning end of this "spectrum" and though I do tend to have problems with social situations knowing even a little bit about autism and the like helps a TON
i guess being somewhat introverted means i'm autistic
i remember once i worked with a college essay person who was convinced i was autistic
she also recommended that i find jesus
that was the end of that

not necessarily because that isn't the determining factor it has to do with the ability to outwardly communicate whats going on in your head. Many autistic people are smarter than we could ever imagine being but just have a lot of trouble expressing themselves in a way most people understand. Having social issues or being "introverted" is just one aspect or symptom if you will.
but I'm really gonna try not to rant because I'm not an expert

My cousin is severely autistic and has down's on top of that. It really is a shame. He's 20 now and still can't talk. He has the mental capacity of a 3 year old. I really hate the jokes about this kinda thing. Thanks for posting this.
Trying to self diagnose anything should be done with a grain of salt, simply because the more you read about a generality, the more you feel like it applies to you. That being said, it really is kind of sad that we make fun of people that can't fully function. At my high school, it happens all the time, and I've decided to organize a fundraiser for Autism research to try and make a stand.

i said what i said because of the way n0grav wrote it. not sure if it was what prof. directly said or miswording. it was sarcasm, albeit pretty bad i guess. i wouldn't consider myself close to being autistic in all seriousness.

Yeah my aspergers has caused me to become introverted due to my low social intelligence that has affected my social life to a huge degree. I literally had no friends until high school where people matured and understood why I had trouble making eye contact, why I was really nervous to talk. Since my freshman year I've entirely changed, I now have a large group of friends and I've really opened up. This brings up the point that since autism is a on a spectrum, that means that it can change over time and can even disappear for people with mild cases on the spectrum. For some it can even get worse, unfortunately.
almost as bullshit as this ADHD nonsense!

So it considers all introverts to have mild autism, or just that being an introvert is sign of possible mild autism?

It's not as bullshit as this ADHD nonsense. And yes, our overuse of antibiotics is a crisis waiting to happen completely unrelated to autism. Most people with aspergers and mild autism aren't given medication. The cases where it is almost life crippling are just as serious as any other genetic disease and do deserve the use of medication. And honestly, that's insulting to the people who actually can't live on their own.

I know this guy who self-diagnoses himself with something different once a month. Oddly enough, that was the clue that a real professional needed to eventually find out he's bipolar.

I agree with you, I don't deny my 1300 hours in a video game are about 1250 more than normal.
I do disagree with gamers who use autism as an insult or talk about it as if it is completely foreign to them. Every time you call something "fucking autistic" you're really just dissing yourself, and if you don't believe me, ask yourself if you're talking about something in a video game.
