I've been playing tf2 like this for a while when I want to do a quick 180 turn my mouse leaves the tf2 window and clicks on the red space around my game. Is there a way to fix this other than changing my res??

I've seen this issue before, primarily with multi-monitor users. Try this out: http://www.snakebytestudios.com/projects/apps/cursor-lock/

Try this.
http://download.cnet.com/Cursor-Lock/3000-2072_4-10767852.html

It locks your mouse to a specific area while it is active, so that the mouse can't elave said area.

It worked well for me, when I played in windowed mode.

I'm actually curious as to how this happens (it happens to me sometimes); I'd imagine it would be due to a frame being skipped or something along those lines.

The way games keep the mouse centered is literally just, every frame, they move the mouse back to the middle of the screen and then use the distance it moved to calculate how much you turn (hence why in-game mouse acceleration is affected by framerates).

However, it should be capturing all click events while it's in focus, so I'm not sure why you can click on the desktop. Does anybody know more about this?

Maybe it's because you manage to move the mouse across the entire screen in the time of a frame. Or if that's not possible, possibly it doesn't work for every frame. Maybe every quarter of a second or so, it takes the mouse to the middle again but still tells where and by how much the mouse is moving on the go
