Is it possible to get a stable 120+fps framerate?

Hello, i'm gonna get to the point here, for a couple years I've struggled to make TF2 reach a high, comfy-for-my-eyes framerate. Thing is, I've tried many approaches; configs, dxlevel <90, removing some custom stuff, but I still can't get my game to stay barely above 120fps during gunfights, dropping from like 280. My refresh rate is 144hz
So I'm just wondering, since I've heard the game is rather cpu-heavy, is there anything that can actually be done to reach a higher framerate than 120
I kno very little about that stuff. Here are my specs since they'll be probably needed:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700KF CPU @ 3.60GHz, 32gb RAM, RTX2070S and i dont fuckin know whatever else is needed
i've heard that if your PC is somewhat powerful and you play on ultralow, it can have a negative impact too
pls help

Perhaps you've already done this, but overclocking your ram to get the fastest clocks and tightest timings possible should help with tf2 somewhat. Overclocking your cpu to the fastest clock you can even if it requires disabling a core or two to keep temperatures in check would also be beneficial for tf2, but disabling cores would hurt you in other workloads.

Scheduling is another area where you could potentially improve performance, for instance by assigning processor affinities such that tf2 and steam use certain cores and all of your other processes run on different ones, but that seems kind of hit or miss from my experience.

If you have a spare drive laying around, you could also try tf2 on a fresh OS install just to make sure you haven't made any changes or are using any software on your main OS that's lowering your tf2 performance somehow from the performance your hardware should be getting.

At the end of the day though, tf2 is always going to perform comparably bad in crowded fights just because of how sequentially it does things, so there's only so much you can do.

To add on to turbochad69's explanation, since TF2 is CPU-based, it's likely that the CPU is not powerful enough to run TF2 at 120fps. TF2 is not optimized that well though, so it's unsurprising that the CPU is struggling,

if its pubs, imo you're kinda screwed in my experience. in Comp you should be able to hold 144+ easily. I would repaste your cpu just to be sure, enable XMP on your ram or maybe OC it a bit. If that still fails you could go the route of https://www.teamfortress.tv/57332/how-i-made-tf2-run-beautifully and have a smoother looking game rather than a higher FPS one. IMO i prefer the smoother look, and if you spend... 2~ hours really testing it you can get some crystal clear looking frames.

oh and ofc prolly should throw on master comfig med-low or low just to be sure. I was dropping below 50fps in the 24/7 skial harvest server with it on medium with a 10900 and 1060

The reason he said no is because you are wrong here. A i7-9700kf should have no problem running the game. It is a modern cpu with good overall performance.

But yeah overclocking cpu and ram would help. No need to overclock gpu. Pubs are fucked sadly

Yeah that makes sense now. I think I was trying to say that TF2 is CPU based, so GPUs do not have as much performance impact. I didn't really check the CPU they use, so I shouldn't have assumed like that. Sorry bout that.

Are you sure that your ram are in the correct slots ? You can check with cpuz if it says "dual channel"
