Competitive TF2 Guide to Everything

I actually thought about something like this, In fact I took action and did it, but it kind of stalled as I got a job and very limited time now. But I still want to make it happen..

A centralized competitive tf2 hub for beginners and pro's alike with every resource possible for competitive (guides, vods, povs, demo analyse, etc etc..)

The site is http://comp.tf/, I actually wrote everything in there, I think I did like a few class guides and scene guides. Might finish it in the future if I got the time and motivation.

Wouldn't it be better if things like this were in a wiki? It seems like there is just too much to put in an article, and a series of articles wouldn't really be the ideal type of organization for something like this. It would be great to organize everything into seperate wiki pages with links, categories, etc., plus it would make it really easy for multiple people to contribute to the writing.

Officially, I've discussed this with a couple of the staff and enigma as well, for now, it really could go either way. Regardless, in the early stages it's easy enough to write it for either format.

Real talk this is a good point. Just compile everything into a Wiki for ease of access for everyone, not just new guys. Allows for easy reference, too.

That guide needs a tl;dr that says "Sniping people can be hard but most people are bad so it isn't."

That's what it seems to boil down to from reading over it.

I'll take a look on how to make a wiki about this. I'm not too sure on how to do that.

In the mean time, anyone who wants to help edit this and has a Google account, add me on Steam and send me your Gmail and I'll add it to the list of people who can edit this. I would make it public for editing, but I don't want to chance people randomly messing with it in a negative way.

edit: And yes, I'll edit and add in already made guides into this one. I just need to figure out how I want this guide to be structured (what goes where) and then I'll start on that.

If someone would like to help me structure this, let me know.

I was wondering, should I have this be a 9v9 and 6v6 guide, or just 6v6? I understand that having a guide for both 9v9 and 6v6 is better than just a guide for 6v6, but I know nothing about highlander. So if you guys think this should be a guide for both, I'll be more than happy to appoint a group of people to work on the entire highlander sections for me.

I see there's some real interest to this... I might get back to work on comp.tf soon, if anyone wants to help shoot me a pm or add me on steam, we could talk as well kirby, could be nice, since I already have the domain and host up and running

If it's a wiki then the people will add 9v9 information.

This is an incredibly good idea. I would absolutely use the domain if I wasn't working/planning on a set of guides for here already. So, if anyone wants to work on guides, I'd most certainly start there.

I think you could include both 6s and highlander in the guide, though it depends on how in-depth the guide is going to become. You'd need to add a section explaining the different formats though.

As far as a wiki goes, why not get the competitive community involved in updating the official tf2 wiki? There is already a competitive section (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Competitive), but there is a lot more information that could be added and updated. The wiki already has mods, structure, and translators, and would probably get more recognition/traffic than something hosted by an individual or teamfortress.tv.

That idea has been put out there before but we could just copy stuff from the main guide we're writing and put it there after.

The important thing is to actually get the guides and stuff finished. We need some people to help with this. If you're interested add me/mana. http://steamcommunity.com/id/lamefx

The thing is, a central site for everything comp would work better imo, a site explaining how each scene works and the differences from NA to EU for example, as well as a class guide for each class both for 6s and highlander...

Etf2l already has the newbie guide, great, tftv gonna have one soon it seems but the ideal would be something that if someone would ask on a forum "I want to start playing tf2 competitively? What should I do?" you would alwaYs direct them to the same site with every information he needs, at least thats what I aimed for when I started working on comp.tf... Still a long way to go but I think with some help it could really take off

I'm not against using comp.tf for something, but that's not a different argument than sending them here. Maybe comp.tf could curate/centralize literally all the sites? It's unclear exactly how things will end, at the moment.

The first step is to come up with a very strong outline that everyone agrees with. Me, Mana, and Lamefx will likely have a rough draft outline to post by tonight. At that point we will look for input to fill in any missing topics as well as crowd sourcing for information.

Edit: Here's Draft 1: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XqVPbSqleO1PL15OSW9vLJ9I1H1-BEJwlW7BYD5vIaQ/edit?usp=sharing

Yeah it would be almost that same and yeah my aim was to centralize all the sites, more than that, was to compile all the resources available for each class/map as in vods, povs, demos, etc, etc... With the permission and credit given to the authors of course.

In my mind it worked something like, you enter the site, you pick a class guide, and you have a text guide with assist images and then yoou have a lost of resources such as configs, demos, vods, useful to the medic class...

easier to direct people to 1 site(teamfortress.tv). If you put all this on a different site, eventually you will have to link people to tf.tv for streams and events and casts. easier to have it all on the same site.

I have written a ton of stuff already today. I'd appreciate it if you went over it and possibly suggested any changes I could make to it, whether it's something I left out (only stuff that fits in with what I've written so far, because I've clearly left out 99% of the stuff I haven't written yet) or whether it's something that needs to be rewritten. Whatever it is, if there's something, let me know.

edit: I'm done writing on this guide for right now, but I'll prob work more on this later today. A couple of people have permission to write/edit, so that might happen. If anyone legitimately wants to help with the writing/editing, post your gmail here or to me on Steam and I'll add you to the list.

Hey, dudes, I'm back to working on this guide and I need some assistance.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JlwTva7IjbJoAOQ5cMAG9NvqBzMA_7LIUpTEHYkojSg/edit

If you scroll down, you'll realize I have written an okay amount thus far. The help that I need is for a list of MGE and DM servers that are not listed in this document. I also need help with what I should write next in the document/guide. It needs to make sense, it needs to belong where it will be.

Any help would be appreciated.

Should also include the ips to .iT's jump and surf servers. I know the jujump server helped me out a lot when I first started playing soldier competitively.

Hey dudes, I've added more in. This time I've added in how to connect to IRC with ATF2 and Mibbit, how to register an account with GameSurge, how to join a pug and some useful IRC commands for the two main pug channels. Give it a read and let me know if something needs to be fixed.

Also, enigma, can you sticky this? It would be convenient for myself but for others especially. I don't know if he will see this, so can someone message him this? thank you.

I don't know how to word this without being too offensive. But if I were a newer player and I clicked on that wall of text I'd probably close it instantly and go back to pubbing. You should really consider making this a series of infographics on a pdf or something like that.

We're slowly working it out. Right now, the priority is to get the sectioning and the guides written. After that we'll make it look nice, because that's the easier part.

It's a whole lot easier to create the basic idea then customize it to be prettier, I guess you could say. If I was making the exact thing right there, I wouldn't be leaving notes for people to help me with stuff or other things.
