i've decided to switch to dxtory from fraps because i noticed a huge performance boost when recording, and the videos look a bit nicer (not to mention the program is very customizable). how should i set up the program so it records videos in a smaller format than 5GB/minute of video?

first and foremost is getting lagarith lossless codec if you haven't already.

other than that to reduce filesize you can try reducing the framerate or resolution, but generally raw videos are going to be pretty enormous no matter what you do. They're more reasonably sized after rendering.

sorry to bump this again but I need someone who's good with this. i'm getting noticeable lag in the videos (not the actual game) when i watch them. i read something about having to adjust the file write speed but i have no idea how to do this, anyone have any experience with this?

Are you sure the lag isn't from the fact that the video is an uncompressed billion gigabyte .avi? Most media players can't handle the raws. Render out a test .mp4 in Vegas or whatever and check if it's still lagging hard.

the file i used to test it with is 500MB and my computer can handle fairly large files in VLC so i don't think that's the issue.

You don't watch lossless files. Well maybe for a quick preview, but recording lossless video means you're going to be using it for some kind of production. If you're not, don't bother with lossless and just encode using x264.

if you really need to view it......
1. faster cpu&/io system. bitrates for lossless codecs are huge.
720P@30fps 95.4Mbps... blu-ray media tops off at 40mbps!

2. get off vlc. Probably packed with outdated decoders, slow renderers, etc.
MPC + klite or whatever your favorite codec pack.
