RAM is probably the hardware I am least familiar with in regards to purchasing. I built a computer a few years back and bought this RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145218

I often notice my computer using nearly all of it when I'm multitasking really hard, so I've decided it's time to upgrade. Can anyone tell me if this would be a good, modern choice?

The only other RAM related thread I could find was marisa's thread from awhile back. Do yourself a favor and don't look that one up.

RAM isn't quite as important as other parts of the computer, so if you want 16 GB, those seem to be fine. I have Ripjaws 8 GB and I haven't had any RAM issues, and they've generally been recommended as quality.

IMO, Corsair used to be a great purchase, like 5 years ago, but it seems that people are having a lot of DOA sticks in the last few years coupled with rebranding it's a tossup.

Also 16 gig is a little overkill, you should be fine sitting at 8 for the time being

I know this is a bit old, but if you haven't bought it yet, make sure your motherboard can handle 8gb sticks. You might need to do 2x4GB or 4x4GB. Mine is from when the core i series came out and it can't do more than 4GB per stick. I'm only bringing this up because you mentioned it's from a few years ago.

If you really want 16GB, I would use

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231627

I'm running on it now, can't say I've ever gotten my money out of it, but it's good to know that it's there in case I need it for some weird reason. Also, it runs at a higher frequency than what you're looking at.

Side note: When you get more RAM, processes allocate more. When I was on my old system with 4GB, I would be using 1-2GB idling, with maybe 500MB being on standby. This is what I'm looking at now, idling:

That's kind of expensive and overkill. Idk if triple channel is okay but http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231358
if you want more than 8 but not quite as much as 16.

Corsair and G.Skill are good brands, you should't have any trouble unless you get unlucky (though FZero's post is right, corsair has been getting a bit worse. They still have pretty good customer service, but having to mail stuff back sucks). The extra RAM speed won't do much for you unless you're doing something you know uses a lot of memory bandwidth (read: not video games). It doesn't hurt but don't expect it to improve your fps or anything. Either you have enough memory/bandwidth or you don't.

Higher frequencies with lower CAS Latencies are best but the 2 are directly proportional in most RAM kits. It doesn't really matter though. G.Skill is a solid choice.
