Playing in ESEA is a step further than your tennis analogy. It's like entering a tennis tournament or bracket, which, in my limited competitive tennis experience, they do charge you for. What you're talking about is not league play as much as it is scrims.

1) It doesn't cost EVERYONE $60. That's just Invite.
2) IF EUROPE DOESN'T WANT TO PAY, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THE 312 TEAMS IN ETF2L WOULD PAY FOR A PRIZE POOL? And if we're extending this to free leagues...you have to include UGC 6s, as much as I don't want to, I have friends in those leagues who play the game more casually and don't feel a need to enter a paid league (which absolutely raises the stakes, even if a little bit). I don't know how many NA teams there are, but I imagine it's not an amount you can just ignore.

However, the average TF2 Invite eSports player is probably doing well enough (usually by having a job, full or part time) to be able to manage $60 every so often...not to mention it's even less for the lower leagues ($30 for a season of Open by my estimation).

i spent $5k building a huge pool in my backyard to pursue my swimming fetish and every summer I have to put in at least 1000 dollars towards general maintenance/pool chemicals/etc. not to mention the 250 i drop for the amount of water to fill it

i had to get that money by shucking corn out in the fields for two summers straight just to get enough cash

I'm always up for having a reasonable discussion with Euros about the merits and downfalls of the North American and European leagues and play, but, every time I'm talking to someone that isn't a caster or a Div 1/Prem player, it always ends up being "Americans are dumb".

I know some other players in the divs lower than that who are pleasant, but I can't avoid noticing that the lower div players are the ones who have huge egos and flawed arguments.

you realize it is $60 for invite only right? Any "league" in most sports (correct me if I'm wrong) expect some kind of payment to participate, usually more money as you climb the ladder. For us open is $10 all the way to $60 in invite.

Yeah it is a bit of change but at the end of the day it is closer to 30$ for open which you would likely play in. Euros do also forget that although UGC isn't as good as ESEA, it isn't like there are no options for Americans to play free tf2.

I think $60 is okay considering the size of the prize pot NA invite has, but it might not seem so good when/if EU first gets an invite division and the prize pool is much less.
