ErenJayI don't get it. Is it like intel's ultrabook thing, where anyone can make a laptop that meets intels guidelines, then call it an ultrabook?
Also, how many different types of steambox do they want? If the base model doesn't get 60fps 1080p on the games it's released with then it's stupid, and if it does, then what else do you need?
Not everyone plays Skyrim and Crysis, some people play Binding of Isaac or Fez or CS 1.6. For those people, a low end, 99 dollar Steam Machine would be perfect. Seeing as its an open platform and the FAQ makes it very clear you are free to change the machine to your liking, you can upgrade it as you see fit.

EDIT: Damnit r4pture is a ninja..
Kaneco-snip-
Couldn't that fit into the announcement? Each console made could have it's own controller made for it.
Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.
So basically:

Pretty sure Valve has said that the very base $100 models are just going to be streaming machines that stream from another PC to your TV.
Also, looks like the final announcement is going to be the controller, the last question in the FAQ heavily implies they're announcing a controller on Friday.

Current gen consoles often don't even get 30fps on 720p in recent popular games.
I think you are forgetting the fact that this is a PC still. Not everyone has good PCs, because they can't afford them. The idea of this is the exact same, if you can't afford a high end steambox, you don't get a high end steambox.

hardware upgrades are only required for games that run natively on Steam OS,
most games that need good graphics are going to be windows/mac only (streamed to steambox)

As someone whos switched to Linux more or less full time, I wonder how SteamOS would work as a standard PC OS, when you disable big picture? It will likely be Ubuntu or some flavor there of running under it, I wonder if SteamOS will ship with DEs besides the Big Picture overlay?

well i know a lot of people that use their xbox for netflix and a lot of people that bought a ps3 for the bluray player, but i digress
valve's hope is that a common os can unify the user experience over a variety of hardware, but their long-term goal appears to be using SteamOS as the sword with which they can slay the Microsoft dragon AKA using Windows for gaming on the modern PC (good luck)
