I have noticed that in a lot of games, such as counterstrike, players use a lower resolution than native to increase performance. To competitive players generally do this in tf2? I run Chris maxframes, but also run at 1920x1080 res, would it be helpful to lower it at all? I generally get 350 fps or so in pubs, would this increase it any? Thinking of switching to 1024x768, since I just started using that in CS:GO as well.
Do you really need more than 350 fps?
Lowering the resolution worked for me, it gave me like +20 fps

Na not really, but just wondering in general :P. Plus the FPS does dip below that a lot. I really don't need more than 60, but since this applies to CS was wondering if tf2 players did it too.

Most of the "play with a lower resolution" thing comes from CRTs where you could get a higher refresh rate at lower resolutions. That doesn't work on LCD displays that most monitors today use.
Personally I've never gotten that great of an FPS increase from lowering my resolution, but if it works for you, I would say to go for it.

I remember in cs 1.6 people used lower resolutions to get better hitboxes.
I can kind of see why, since the time the game was made but I think it's just preference.

i play on 1024x768 since i used small resolutions when i played cs before tf2. also my monitor gets 75 hz on it and only 60 on my native res of 1680x1050. i also find 1024 easier to play scout/sniper on
i used 640x480 for cs 1.6
i now use 1280x720 for tf2
the lower resolutions have always felt smoother for me, especially in large fights in tf2.

Models are bigger, and therefore (imo) easier to track. I also think once you've gotten used to using that resolution the fov feels really weird on other resolutions, so it's hard to switch. Also you can quite easily actually move your move and look around, you don't need the tiny amount of fov gain.

That's like saying that you prefer 70fov since the models are bigger and the fov loss is completely insignificant because you could just move your mouse more.

Also out of curiosity, would lowering your aspect ratio on a higher aspect ratio monitor give the effect of increasing your fov? Because I've been playing a lot of BF4 at 120 fov and it is amazing haha.
Thanks for all the replies by the way!

Lowering ratio will make you have less fov, more fov comes from wider screens.

Ah crap. More than 90 fov really should be added into tf2, I see no reason why not. I guess because it would break spy :/

It depends on the CRT, I have an old one in my attic that can do 120hz at 640x480 and 75hz on 1024x768 but I really got tired of having a huge box on my desk in my way.

Pro cs players like that res because that is what they are used too. 1.6 was built for low res. However in CS:GO it does not do anything other than change your fov.

Wow. I didn't realise that. I tried to find a 120hz crt on some used websites like adverts.ie and I couldn't find a single one. Gonna try find one now for cheap and see if I can get it up to 120hz!

Less people who stream at low 4:3 resolutions use CRT's than you'd think. Most streams I've seen are really just people who prefer low 4:3 res even on a BenQ/Asus. I tried it and it does make most textures look worse and increase visibilty/contrast a little. Some crosshairs have better contrast at lower res as well, but you still have to get used to the loss in FOV.

No it isn't, because playing at 640x480 won't lower your fov by 30. That's ridiculous.

90->70 is 20 difference, not 30, and it's almost the same as difference between 16:9-4:3 (About 15 degrees)

I said 30 because with high/wide resolutions you get closer to 100, and closer to 80 on smaller ones. Either way it's not the same what so ever and saying it is pretty ridiculous. Read what I said after. I said once you get used to it it's hard to go to something else. It feels too weird. What I meant is that it isn't a lot of FOV you're using and if you're used to it already it doesn't really matter.

it's pretty much just preference, I have a pretty bad pc and still don't notice much difference in fps depending on resolution. maybe some people do.
IMO, if you get high FPS already, go crazy with the resolution. However, if you're FPS lagging then I'd say notch it down. I personally just did it and wow I'm getting so much more FPS and everything feels a lot smoother. But if my native resolution already had 60+ FPS, I'd stay with it.
All in all, I'd say it's preference if FPS isn't a concern. It kinda feels like you lose a bit of FOV, but it's not noticeable IMO.
