Well Felix was in the Austrian Military and got the majority of his parachute training there - he also was part of some elite parachuting unit that does areal tricks and so on. He then took to doing more difficult things after his military career ended (base jumping, etc). I imagine most of his jumping was sponsored since I doubt any military really pays people lavishly lol.
It's an important step scientifically too because it shows how a parachute system could work for manned-mission aborts. It's been something everybody has been interested in since manned spaceflight began. The soviets *did* utilize an ejector seat system with Yuri Gagarin - of course that was as he was deorbiting and not as he was ascending. Interest in the US picked up after the Challenger disaster, since the investigation showed that at least some of the crew were still alive when they hit the water.
