Should I update my processor?

I've recently been seeing sporadic frame drops that may or may not be due to my processor and I was wondering if anyone could assist with their input on whether or not I should get a new graphics card come Black Friday.

I currently have:

AMD Phenom II x4 840T Processor (4CPUs), ~2.9 GHz
with an NVIDIA GTX 560

Any and all assistance is appreciated!

Yes. 2500k. Need new mobo too. You could upgrade to an AMD hex core, but I'd go Intel. Leaps and bounds over anything AMD has to offer.

goin intel u'll need a new mobo, that would be the best cpu's tho. but if u dont wanna buy a new mobo i can vouche for the phenom 1055t 6 core @2.8ghz. Also got the same gpu you do. Runs everything just fine, hell i get 60 fps in BF3 on high / ultra mixed settings, at 766p of course, so tf2 aint nothin for it.

The real question is whether or not you can run NS2.

If you don't want to get another motherboard as well then get one of the new Piledriver chips that AMD released a few days ago. They're around the same price than a 2500k but better for multi-threading and you won't need to switch mobos.

edit: this one specifically http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284

keep in mind that the results may not be as good as you would expect with tf2, seeing as multicore support is fairly limited on the source engine

IIRC it's possible for most am3 motherboards to simply run a bios update to enable am3+ support, seeing as am3+ socket is physically the same than am3...you really need to make sure that your current motherboard is able to support am3+

I have a Bulldozer (Fx-8120) and all I can suggest is to do what John said and get a 2500k/3570k.

The main reason I'm thinking about upgrading my processor is that I've recently acquired a 120 Hz monitor and it'd be near useless with the fps drops I've been getting. I'll look into these, thank you John, Rich, FFG, and reilly.
