If people think ochem is memorization (outside of naming molecules, which doesnt really matter that much), you are doing it wrong.

The key to chemistry is learning the concepts. Once you learn the conspets, you can apply it to situations you have never seen before.

I have known people who spend all thier time memorizing individual reactions. Stuff like : if you react bromoethane with sodium cyanide in acetone, then the product is cyanoethane and sodium bromide.

And actually if you learn the concepts of when you have a good leaving group (bromine) and a good nucleophile (cyanide) in the same reacvtion mixture, you will get a substitution reaction. Its that simple.

My alarm clock decided to shit the bed for my chem midterm, ended up waking 20 mins after it started X_X
I like chem labs when we get to explode shit and make pretty mixtures but it's p. boring for me otherwise :(

I can confirm that Organic Chemistry is a nightmare. I went to school for Biology. (I actually thought I wanted to go to med school, then I got a job in a hospital.) Organic Chemistry was required. I got the highest grade in the class. I got an A.

With 52%. 50% was the cutoff for an A.

It's impossible.

Fuck it.

I was forced to take a course or two in high school...did ok, but I remember essentially none of it. My dad is a PhD organic chemist (who works in anything but), and therefor the black sheep of a family of mechanical and aeronautical engineers, so he was cool with my de facto rebellion.

swiperYeah, fuck chemistry. While my friends were getting raped by real science classes, I was having fun taking Geology and Astronomy lol.

Astronomy is not a real science? Poo on you!

how you did in your chem class is largely based on your school/your teacher. I had a pretty easy time in honors chem in high school because my teacher was cool. but now I go to a pretty good college, and organic chemistry was hell.

Never taken O-Chem. Have friend that have. My roommate first year spent hours a day drawing out chemicals on a whiteboard for practice. Pretty sure he aced the tests doing that.

Chem is easy. Just read the text book cover to cover and then sleep/read shit on your phone/goof around in class.

In about 6th grade I was a fucking genius and realized that textbooks contain all the shit you're supposed to learn. Read your fucking textbook.

Currently in regular chem with a bunch of stupid shits that I call my friends. If you don't understand chem, go up to your parents and tell them that they raised you wrong. Chem is just problem solving, which is more related to your early childhood than anything you do in high school.

I'm planning on taking a chemistry placement test to save myself from taking a prerequisite class, but I haven't taken chemistry since my high school class 4 years ago. Can anyone recommend a good source of chemistry tutorials/explanations to refresh my memory? Luckily I only need to get 40% on the test to pass, so maybe I could try winging it but I'd like to be somewhat prepared.

I am familiar with those first three sites, and i'd say that videos of this nature were a big reason I have gotten so into science these past few years (specifically sixtysymbols really got me into physics). They're presented in an interesting, informative and entertaining way all at the same time. Thanks :)

MIT's lecture http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/5-111-principles-of-chemical-science-fall-2008/video-lectures/

OR pick a different chem course http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/
There's a lot!!!!

there are many other lectures too other than chem.
their vector calculus lecture helped me through the tough part of it :D
