Ok so this news is a few days old but I just learned about it. Talk about an end of an era, I'm a little blown away. Carmacks brilliant mind is one of the primary reasons we play the game we play today, although indirectly. He is however directly the reason FPS took the limelight for so many years and brought me to the kind of gaming I hold so dear. I may not have been a huge fan of id for their last few years, but god damn talk about a legacy. I used to talk to my LAN buddies about John and id like many of us do about Gabe and Valve today. They're legendary, and without John, it'll never be the same id we grew up with.

On a happier note, he is moving full time to work with Oculus VR, so we should see good things with that kind of legendary coding brain behind it.

Quick edit: And I just realized, no more Carmack keynote at Quakecon. :,(

More exciting to have him working at Oculus than at id. The days where 1 person could code a revolutionary graphics engine are long gone. While I'm sure he would still be able to make an impact on improving 3d technology I feel like there is a lot more opportunity for individuals to have big influence in the VR space which is more or less still in its infancy.

If he left im sure its for a good cause.

Incoming revolutionary oculus stuff hopefully, i'd love to see carmacks name on it.
Other than rage, when is the last time id Software had a large-scale project?
