An adware/malware called "Tube Dimmer" has invaded my computer, and I'm having a tough time removing it/finding the rootkey.

Anyone have any tips for tough malware? I believe it has let in other branch adware and I dont really want to spend money and go to the local PC shop to get it looked at yet

Just like platypus said. Carefully back up everything you want. Format hard drive. Reinstall from scratch. I would never recommend trying to "repair" a hard drive when it's much safer to restart everything.

If you're not really good with computers, it's likely easier to format. The reason being is that you will likely have to regedit a bit

If you don't want to format reload try Adwcleaner, its a great tool after that install malwarebytes and run a full system scan. I work in a pc repair shop and those to programs have saved me from having to do countless reloads. Adwcleanwer might get picked up as a virus but its not, tell your anti-virus to allow it.

Would recommend Combofix for really hard to get rid of viruses.

Also Malwarebytes & Malwarebytes Rootkit Remover.

Formatting your hard drive is a little extreme as most adware is less lethal than regular malware.

I recommend Malwarebytes, they have pretty great stuff and you don't need anything more than the free version unless you want it as your main AV.

Can't think of any virus I've ever had that it couldn't remove.

Also they have an additional anti-rootkit if you're still having problems after scanning with just Malwarebytes.

EDIT:

Fogyou guys realize this thread was originally made in December 2013 right?

I honestly didn't notice.
