ETF2L is a community league, there are no veiled interests here unlike the businesses you mentioned, it is run by volunteers.
Also, what happened was a case of bad management and poor decision making from all parties involved, the blame is not on the admins only, read sideshow post and a few posts on the etf2l thread and you will understand things could have been handled much better from every party involved.

The admins gave the schedules for the playoffs and shit way before the season started.
The finalists have made no effort whatsoever to schedule the game before 10.12., even though they had the chance to do that earlier.
This of course, to me at least, seems like they care about the ETF2L Finals just as much as Mike cares about his Uni stuff. If you don't have the time to play vidya games, then don't sign up for the season. Or is that too simple to realize?

So the alternative is to let them default the game, pay them the sponsor's money, and then go and explain to the sponsors why they didn't get exposure in a grand final because people decided not to play. The grand final is a big deal. If I was a sponsor, I don't think I'd sponsor this league again.
At least by withholding the prize money for the team that defaults, the league can suggest to the sponsor that the remaining money gets put into a new, smaller tournament, or gets carried across into the next season keeping them on as a minor sponsor. This keeps them happy.
Of course, we all know it wouldn't come to that. What is more likely to happen, is the other team show up and play with pyros and engineers just to stick a middle finger up to the league because they wouldn't let the players play when they wanted. League, Community, and even future sponsorship deals lose in this case.
At that point i'd also withhold money, write a new rule stating that teams must complete all of their playoff matches and attempt play to the best of their ability (admin's discretion), otherwise they may not be paid prize money and could face player bans. Yeah... I'm not a fan of on-the-fly rules, but in this case I think it's fully justifiable otherwise everyone is going to lose anyway.

only real reasons i can come up with for this NEEDING to be played is a) the sponsors want the match played before christmas so little fuckers can ask for the sweet <insert brand name thing> from santa! or b) something tax related that has to be done before the new year but this is a shot in the dark

This. I never understand why playoffs are so close to the holidays. I think a lot of TF2 players are in college, and if I was still in college, winter break would be right now until Jan. I never took my computer home (desktop) with me during winter break. I just don't see the point of starting a league at a time that would make it finish mid December. Hell, I remember that TWL wouldn't even allot you to schedule matches for two weeks during the holidays.
