jakeowatyThere is a few things that I would fix about the MX, so I'll make a list of things that could be done with it. (I know you are swamped with work, so whenever you can or ask someone capable of doing so, because I literally can't do shit, I can just list things.)

- better colorscheme. IMO current one looks... really white. Different colours help a lot in playing Medic, both for low and buffed teammates, damage done, low ammo and uber. I made my own ClientScheme file, and here's (more or less) how it looks (damage numbers are pure yellow).

That's what MX is for, so you can create your own colors. It's kinda like a canvas for your own hud :]

Why? I think legal problems could start when whayay gave us all a donation link, since he used fonts that are technically under copyright protection. I think if he had decided not to do it (allow us to donate), there wouldn't be any problems. As long as we or anyone else isn't profiting using those fonts, we are safe.

According to your logic, every single essay you've written you'd have to submit to Microsoft or Apple, since you probably used their fonts while writing them, thus breaking the law. Kind of stupid, right?

No because Microsoft/Apple gives you permission to use the fonts, thats why they're included in the OS, whayay was using a font that wasnt his and receiving money for it.

This is a pretty noble move but to be honest, I don´t care much about legalese.

So, is this the end of the HUD modifications thread? Should we back up all HUDs out there in case someone decides to follow this idea?

I just want my TF2 to look pretty. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

dashnerIMO, however, you're making a huge deal out of nothing.

I will hop on that bandwagon. True, it's entirely up to you what you want to do with your hud and we have nothing to do with this, but you really are making a huge deal out of nothing.

Look how many huds there are out there, some of them using legit font, some of them don't. Haven't heard yet of a hud being taken down by copyright infrigement. This stuff doesn't happen simply because it is not supposed to bring in profit, it's by community for community and we are all grateful for it!

Thing is that you are really scared of nothing in particular. Even if someone would try to get you for copyright, taking it down is the usual first and last step in the whole lawsuit.

Look how many videos have copyrighted music in them. As long as you don't take any profit for it, you are pretty much safe to use them, and even if, you won't get sued straight away, they'll ask you to take it down first.

Easy as that. But as said before, you do what you want with the hud. Which is a shame, because it was a hud that had everything needed in it without overdoing anything.

Take the font files out of the downloads, have users install the needed fonts themselves?

Also I need you to make a simple HUD for Fistful of Frags.

It's a little bit different than videos using copyrighted music. When that happens, you just hear the song in the video, but you don't get the actual music file itself. With HUDs, you get the HUD AND the font files used; this would be like downloading a video and getting a copy of the .mp3 used for free. That .mp3 is most likely worth ~$1; font files can easily be worth $20+ EACH.

Just a few more comments because it's really irritating:

  • In MvM, there is no indicator for giant robots, meanwhile the indicator for crit robots is a red background. On the standard interface, the crit indicator is a cyan outline and the giant indicator is a red background.
  • The MvM party menu has tiny fonts for player names and the chat box.

These might not be relevant, I'm using a slightly old version of the HUD and forgot to report these. Sorry if they've been fixed.

EDIT: I posted this without refreshing and seeing all the trouble regarding fonts. So, keep these in mind for whenever you resume. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication, and I look forward to seeing what you do with the project from here on.

Some 100% libre fonts you might like to consider:
Ubuntu/Ubuntu Condensed
Roboto/Roboto Thin

Here's a quick gallery of what it looks like when I replace all of the Futura fonts with Roboto variants.
http://imgur.com/KO81Bt0,vCrmg7V,4qe11Xe,N3iq7n9,aI4g6IQ,w5D1lnI#0

All I did was replace the very end of the ClientScheme.res:
http://pastebin.com/L9zBjp0V

Odd numbers are before, even are after. Sorry for the inconsistencies in the in-game screenshot, it was taken from a demo at the exact same tick but still has its inconsistencies.

As you can see, Roboto would be a great font for most of the letter typesetting in the game, with some tweaking; the menu could switch to the bold variant, the kill feed would need a different style than the direct Futura>Roboto translation, etc. However, numbers are quite a bit off, so in the end I think you'll need to find a new font for numbers that still has the fantastic feel of the Futura version you've been using.

Good luck man.

Actually, yeah... looking at the font out of the game, I don't think they worked correctly either.

Is there anything different besides their definition in ClientScheme.res? Shouldn't pointing them to new font files in the resources\fonts folder work?

I understand this may have been suggested previously but here is my proposition for a workaround regarding the font problem:

1. The developer creates their HUD with the desired font, preferably open source or otherwise free.

2. The end-user of the HUD is left with the responsibility of downloading the font from the appropriate source and installing it on their system or in the HUD folder.

Seems simple enough to me.

The issue isn't necessarily distribution. If the font used is libre and permits derivative works, then it's totally okay to bundle it with the HUD. The issue that happened here is that Futura is a proprietary Adobe font that is not allowed to be distributed. It costs multiple hundreds for a single license.

I'm trying to send it to all of the people asking me for the hud and fixes, but I think it would be disrespectful for whayay to do so.

But. Waiting so much for the new edition I can't help distributing the last version to people. It's like a drug and I'm a dealer.

Shouldn't be necessary. I don't see any other HUD makers getting paranoid about a DMCA. But, since he can do what he wants, it's life. Pretty funny though.

And jake, you can just upload it to dropbox and post the link here, you know.
