If you have a chance, get your parent to sit with you and have you drive around the area of the DMV. On that drive, take note of any particular signage, amount of lanes, turning lanes, etc. Having some familiarity with the area is a big help so not too much stuff takes you by surprise. [An example... one of the stoplights near the DMV I took my test at had a 'No turn on red' sign for if you were making a right turn. It was a small sign that would have been very easy to miss if I didn't know about it.]

When turning into a busy street make sure not to just look behind for oncoming traffic, but for people entering or exiting in front of you. They can fly out pretty fast and unexpectedly.

Even if you think you don't have to signal, do it anyway. Lane changes, exiting parking lots, pulling towards and away from the curb, turning corners, etc.

If they have the portion of the test where you have to back up against a curb, you can take it slow. No need to rush it, take your time and make sure you're looking at the mirrors as well as over your shoulder.

You should also know the functions of your car controls. Turn signals, lights, defogger, emergency lights and all that.

Be extremely careful with your judgement.

-don't be nervous cause its a waste of your energy. failing a driving test is not a big deal, the whole thing is a joke.
-do exaggerated head movements for anal driving instructors.
-when you're in the parking lot walking to your car and he asks you is this your first time taking the test? LIE so he doesn't fail you on principle. "No sir, its my second time" :>

took a driving test in my supra for the lols once. jdm, manual, slammed on the stiffest suspension in the world, 6pt harness, no traction control turbo'd on bald summer tires in pouring rain.

-actual tips = drive with 2 hands (dont leave your hand on gearshift like me, even better use an automatic), do full FULL stops I was trying to and I still got rolling stops, shoulder check when you turn right even if you KNOW theres no one there cause you just drove past it. shoulder check all lane changes. scan intersections like an ostrich. don't let him trick you, like pulling over in a bus lane.
playgrounds/school zones, turn the wheel in the correct direction when you park on slopes, reverse stall parking. I didn't have to parallel in any of my tests but you may have to. might as well learn it and tbh its pretty easy if its a reasonably sized spot. use turn signals everywhere including cul de sac and reverse stall park and pulling over. speed limits obviously. but accelerate smoothly if merging onto a highway. calm cautious the rest of the time just make the instructor feel safe I guess.

good chance you won't get these but in my test they made me pretend I was getting out of the car when it was parked at the side of the road (shoulder check before you open the door). also had to list potential hazards.. just name anything you see, crosswalks, wildlife, pedestrians, bus lanes, cars, construction, "the glare from the sun on the wet road reflecting into my occulus" and there is no wrong answer so just keep going till hes bored af and makes you stop.

i like to visualize a glass that is 3/4ths filled; i maneuver the car in such a way where i don't spill any water via sudden or uncontrolled movements.

As far as roundabouts go, after checking your blind spot before making a turn, look in the direction the traffic is coming from.

Depends on the tester completely. My tester just sat shotgun and texted the whole time with the only instructions being "go around the block once."

I felt kinda iffy about which way to go and there were no speed limit signs so I drove like shit. Luckily my dad was there to bribe him with restaurant dine-outs so i got my license. If you really think you'll do poorly, try bringing some restaurant dine-outs.

Heavy traffic can work to your advantage. If you're moving slower then and have to stop often then you have more time to process and there's less likelihood of something happening very suddenly. They most likely won't count traffic conditions against you so just make your ride smooth.

Don't take corners too wide, maybe? That's the reason I failed the first time apparently.

to practice parallel parking set up 2 trash cans and practice between them... and for parallel parking with real cars its easier to line up your front wheels with the other car your parking behind and reverse from there. everything else is really easy

Just a tiny thing I guess, but you know the jerky/sudden movements that stressed and/or bad bus drivers do? Avoid those as much as possible. Make the ride comfortable for whoever is testing you, that's a nice show of control over the vehicle.

This is a pretty good example of a mindset you can have to avoid said jerkiness.

This is wrong. Steering wheel always gets turned towards the curb when parking on a slope. you want your car to run in to the curb and not traffic if it should roll.

i just took the permit test, and I was confused by this too. I thought turning your wheels towards the curb would make more sense, but apparently its toward the street when uphill.

The reason it is that is because when your car would hypothetically roll downhill, the wheels and car steer away from the road. which is what you want! :D
