Hey there.
After watching speedruns on and off for the past year, I've recently learned Diddy Kong Racing (any% and 100%) and soon to be Super Mario Sunshine (any%, maybe 100% on down the road); and I was wondering if anyone in the TF2 community had any interest in them/does any runs themselves? I know that there's usually a thread on here about the current year's SGDQ/AGDQ, but there's never been really a general discussion the topic (at least, not that I could find.. sorry if this isn't the case).
That being said; if you do speedrun, what games do you run? And if you don't, what games do you like to watch?
If there's enough interest I could maybe compile a list of all of the TF2 runners we have here, with links to their streams and the games that they run. :3

i was thinking about picking up sly cooper 1 (ps2)
i talked about it a lot with the guy who ran it at sgdq and he was really friendly and helpful about it
the new flavor of the month in speedgames is shovel knight, and i'm pretty sure there's going to be an all-out war to who gets to run it at the next *gdq
i run gimmick games that bots randomly assign in irc, lol
iirc there's a bunch of source game runners on tf.tv

I'm looking to get into running various source games, primarily hl2. I've been researching it for a few weeks now, and it looks really fun.

I've run several games like A Link to the Past, Secret of Mana, Escape Goat 2, and Star Wars: Battlefront II since I stopped playing TF2. It's a pretty amazing hobby, and the community is awesome. I'd encourage anyone who's even moderately interested to give it a try, and see what they can do.
A general piece of advice for picking games is to think of a game you could see yourself pouring a thousand hours into, or completing a hundred times or more. This is pretty key because it's very easy to get frustrated with mistakes or randomness after a while, and it helps a lot to love what you're playing.

yeah i don't understand people that bandwagon on popular games (that they don't even enjoy) rather than just playing games that they like
i've seen a lot of instances where people will ragequit their game because of not getting a pb in weeks/months, but stuff like that happens
the main enemy in speedrunning is pretty much always yourself

I've been considering running games for ages but I can't decide on any particular one. I'm currently between alttp and Halo:CE, SGDQ didn't help with choosing at all.

I run/route for Octodad: Dadliest Catch. I don't do full runs for the game, but I do Individual Levels runs. Perhaps once I become consistent enough with the other levels of the game, I'll do some full run speedruns of the game.
What I'm currently working on for the game is a segmented run for Octodad: Dadliest Catch, where I'm working with a few other runners to complete the individual levels as fast as possible. Should hopefully be done relatively soon, I've already completed three levels thus far.

I currently run Jak 3 Any%/All Missions, actually pb'd 10 minutes ago! also been considering picking up Zelda Oracle of Ages. As far as watching its mostly just Mega Man, and other Jak runners, as well as people like ssbmstuff and obdajr.

If CS:S surfing counts that's what I do. It's a very competitive community. I've been surfing over 2 years and I'm still terrible compared to 100's of other surfers.

If you pick up Oracle of Ages I'd definitely watch a stream, the gameboy zelda games don't really get the attention they deserve.

Would love for you to begin super Mario 64, got this from Wikipedia with different milestones for each stars
Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 is a game that is known for its fast gameplay and many speedrunners, and is the most competitive and popular game to speedrun.[27] There are five categories that are common in speedrunning: 0 star, 1 star, 16 star, 70 star, and 120 star.
120 star
A 120 star speedrun consists of obtaining every star available in the game. The world record for a non-tool-assisted run is held by Puncayshun with a time of 1:43:42 (played on Nintendo 64).[28] The world record tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) is held by a team of speedrunners consisting of MKDasher, Nahoc, SonicPacker, Bauru, Eru, Goronem, Jesus, Kyman, Mokkori, Moltov, Nothing693, Pasta, SilentSlayers, Snark, MythzjE and ToT. with a time of 1:20:41.[29]
70 star
To beat the game without utilizing programming errors in the game to sidestep various checkpoints (star doors; glitching through the 'endless stairs'), 70 stars are required to reach the final Bowser stage. In 70 star, the optimal route has the speedrunner not entering the level Jolly Roger Bay at all. The non-TAS world record is held by Puncayshun with a time of 49:05 (played on Nintendo 64) as of May 26, 2014 ,[30] and there is a TAS completing the game 'BLJless' in 42:58.52 done by 15 TASers.[31]
16 star
16 star used to be the fastest known method to complete the game, before it was obsoleted by the 1 star and 0 star categories. It exploits two separate glitches to enter late areas early. The first is colloquially known as the "MIPS Clip", where the player collects 15 stars to make MIPS the rabbit appear, and then uses it to get on the other side of the 30 star Bowser door. The second glitch is known as the "Backwards Long Jump" which is used on the two stairways upstairs in the castle after the player has obtained the second key. This glitch abuses the odd mechanics of the backwards long jump to propel the player through the 50 star door and also to skip the endless stairway. The 16 star non-TAS record is held by "A_k_1kan" with a time of 15:22.[32] The TAS world record was completed by Nahoc with a time of 13:28.[33] Nahoc edited together files containing the exact input from single star runs done by numerous authors he names in the video description.
0 star
The 0 star run completely forgoes any stars, opting instead to go straight to fights with Bowser by primarily using the "Backwards Long Jump" glitch. The non-TAS world record is held by Xiah, with a time of 6:58.[34] The world record TAS since 31 March 2013 is 5:01:25, done by a team of speedrunners consisting of Snark, Kyman and ToT.[35]

I've gotten into running Hotline Miami but still haven't even gotten a time because every time I try I mess up and restart which is dumb, because I can't work to pb, but I guess it is because I want my first time to be good.
I'm also interested in running half-life 2, just because ABHing is fun as hell to do and I like the source engine. But I have too much on my "videogame plate" for now, so ill just stick to hotline and getting better at tf2 for the time being.

I mostly speedrun smaller indie games. I used to run Noitu Love 2 (which was at SGDQ last week) half a year ago, and for the past month I've been running TowerFall Acension. The thing that I like most about it is that it has two modes which are on the opposite ends of the speedrunning spectrum - the Trials mode is all about perfecting movement, frame-perfect actions and routing, while the Quest mode has just enough RNG that it does not affect the total time by a lot, but still requires you to approach each level differently every time, so you have to adapt a lot and know the behaviour and spawn pattern of every enemy.
And while not releveant for speedrunning, the third mode, Versus, is pretty much the greatest multiplayer game since Smash Bros. I just enjoy this game a lot overall.
Currently holding the WR on Quest Mode, but that doesn't count for much if there's just three people running it, and their latest runs being more than a month ago.

tbh you should just do a full run and try to improve it rather than just trying to force a good run to happen before you accept it as your first run lol
