Would it be a good idea to show a summary of a map before a match starts? As an example, in the i49 Fragumentary, Lange said "The teams were going to play on Gullywash, a map know for its notorious defences and flamboyant offclassing". We can have a little video/talk about the control points on the map, the flanks, chokes, common hiding spots (for backcapping, if there are any), the various strats teams follow (including the usual rollouts?), the map locations (IT/PC, sewer room, just like the one the comp.tf wiki has), etc. It could be a nice replacement for the pre-cast video, and provide for a better (more imersive??) stream experience, especially for some custom maps. So yeah, how silly/viable idea is this?
Its an amazing idea, that was one of the things that people i know said when they watched GXL is they dont understand the basic callouts etc. it would be really helpful IMO
i think lange did that as filler more or less for an intro to whats being played but yeah more casters should definitely follow that example. a lot of people that watch tf2 streams arent super into competitive and might not know all the names of certain spots so it definitely couldn't hurt to give a little map insight if theres time to do so....definitely before all the players pile into the server
I love this as a tournament things, but I feel like it might end up a bit repetitive for the returning viewers. If it was a canned video that they showed before the casters got talking it would be fine, but having casters going over the callouts and explaining map dynamics before every single match would get old to both us and them pretty fast.
Here's a good example of a pre-recorded map summary from Quakecon, would love to see the same kind of thing for TF2:

In the recent Lower Bracket Finals for ESEA-IM cast, Fragile and I covered a lot of the map Metalworks in an attempt to kill time. Getting an actual pre-recorded review would be interesting but probably boring if it's the same video across a season, it's nice having things like invite players like Fragile explaining his experience with the map
this was actually a feature i was working on for our overlays, it was mostly completed outside of a few graphics that got kinda put aside after school started to pile work onto me. it would basically sum up a map's strengths, weaknesses, and a few notable facts along with a render of the map overhead (the graphics i was referring to).
i'll restart work on this.

Yeah when I read this thread I immediately thought of those intros from quakecon. That's be pretty awesome to have for tftv.

Like a powerpoint showing snapshots of the map with notes? That'd be pretty cool, not to knock truktruk's wonderful zen looping camera shots of the map

i was actually planning on getting rid of smooths altogether in favor of some more custom sfm stuff (like the clips dashner makes since those are pretty awesome). but yeah, essentially.

Could you provide an example? Tried searching, but couldn't find one...

Holy crap that was really solid. But mostly because a review for a map as small as toxicity is very short 'n' sweet.
