Alright, I have absolutely no idea how much work this will take, but what if you were able to simply type in the forum post something like @flame and it would shoot a notification letting you know that you included him in your post? It would pop up either in your inbox or in a separate category. I suppose it would also ping you if you got quoted.
Would that be cool? Got the idea from Instagram and Twitch chat.

2. run a script every minute through cron to clear the queue

Not to be terribly pedantic, but wouldn't the "proper" way be to have an active queue consumption service rather than a cron job? If there is more than a minute's worth of work in the queue, the processes would stack up, for instance.
