So I don't know about you guys but I feel as if overwatch is getting over hyped by quite a few people. All saying it's gonna be much better than tf2. I don't really see it this way. I mean sure it looks great but the skill ceiling also does seem very low. I don't think it will ever be as good as tf2. It seems like people like to be sheep and just follow the crowd and say 'oh tf2 is ded'. Tf2 is not dying as much as some say. They're just 'bored' of the game.
Anyone else think this or am I the only one?

I think the reason that they want to have styles or abilities that look good in overwatch. I mean you can only tell whether tf2 players are good from their general performance, there is just no standard that can measure their skills. In overwatch, however you can say some kind of ability is used well, and it's just much more obvious. Maybe I am wrong...
I to am very apprehensive about Overwatch, they have a lot of really passive classes some of which from what I understand are only available if you buy? The time based abilities have a lot of potential just hope they won't be implemented the way I think they will.
even though i wont get an invite to the beta, i'm still excited for it.
though, while streaming i expressed concern that the gameplay was gonna be clunky crap (fallout 3-esque), and someone in chat said "it looks like unreal tournament but at half speed."
i have faith in blizzard.

Biggest season of open since s14, I'd say things are looking up for TF2.
Overwatch is overhyped and overmarketed, just look at star_ latest videos and twitter posts it pretty much screams "OMG I've never played this game but its so much better than tf2 already, blizzard totally didnt pay me to promote it"
That being said I'm a sucker for any class based fps and the game concept looks cool, , but fuck the haters, tf2 has airshots and thats all I need.

I'm buying Overwatch when it's released because it looks familiar to what I enjoy in games and I like the idea of a major studio making a class based shooter. I will also continue to play TF2 because it's still a game I'm heavily playing and comp is the bomb yo.
Also, OP, I hope you are considering that people are payed to generate hype and promote a game. That's generally how companies make money. You know, massive advertisement, marketing, publishing, etc. Just because it is a trending topic in video games and people discuss it, doesn't necessarily mean they are "sheep".
Plus, TF2 isn't dead, competitive TF2 is just having an existential crisis.

Skill ceiling is crazy low, and it seems as competitively viable as rock paper scissors. It might take some of the casual pubbers away from TF but I can't see it being more than a pub game.
it's gonna be the flavor of the month once it comes out, i'm sure a good amount of people will buy it, stream it etc but it wont last. everyone will shift focus back to the game they mainly play in a really short period of time
It will probably be like Brink but it might not suck as hard, I feel like balancing is probably going to be the major issue with this game.
If Blizzard has a $25k or $50k Overwatch tournament (which isn't unlikely given that Blizzard is supporting most of it's IPs competitively in large ways), it doesn't matter how crappy it is, a ton of competitive TF2 players will flock to it. That's why TF2 players are hoping it will be good.
is it bad that i want to finally play a game that has developer support for its competitive game mode
i'm still going to play tf2 for as long as possible, but i fully plan to play overwatch competitively

Speak for yourself.

You guys are forgetting it's Blizzard that is making this game. I don't think it will be exactly as TF2, it seem it's going to be slower and focused on moba style abilities, so most people might not make the switch, but expect a huge competitive scene nevertheless. For last year's announcement, it seems Blizzard will be investing in the competitive scene since day 1.
Overwatch is going to suck, they simplified every single thing that made tf2 hard to play. All you gotta press is spacebar to rocket jump, or lets have a guy with a shield on a choke point while our whole team spams it and wins game!!!1
The game gives us lots of "air movement" (which is basically press one button and you fly) but I doubt there's gonna be airstrafing or airshots or something remarkable when it comes to movement.
Literally the only reason this game is hyped is because blizzard is behind it.

I think a lot of it comes from people wanting to play a class based shooter with comp support from the developers, and it will have this, if Blizzard can make a fucking card game one of the biggest esports there's no reason why Overwatch won't become big if they want it to.
A lot of people already moved away from TF2 to CSGO simply because it's a good shooter game with active developer support and tournaments. That being said, a lot of TF2 players also hate CSGO and prefer class based action. Voila.
Yes it looks simple right now but it's not even in public beta yet alone released... Of course the game is going to develop over time. You can't really say it will be an EZ no skill game if all we've gotten so far are cinematic trailers and what 30 second basic class skill intros and 1 forced shout cast?
Just take a look at TF2 on release and what it is now. Blizzard will also have more than 2-3 people working on it, unlike TF2.
I'm excited for it, at least.

It looks gimmicky. But I guess if it's a good game it'll become popular.
ya u guys need to realize this is a blizzard game. chris metzen was almost in tears when he announced it so u know this game is like their baby. u can count on them pouring a shit ton money in it and thats enough reason to become exited about learning and improving in it.
I don't see how anyone can extract so much from just a few videos, it's nothing but speculation at this point.
Looks like it will be a decent game but I really dont get the comparisons to TF2. It has some similar class concepts but the nature of the gameplay looks completely different and (at least in my case) not at all similar to what I like about TF2.
I don't see the point in making judgment calls on whether it will be good or bad when it's nowhere close to release. If it's good, great, another shooter in the same market as tf2 that will be fun, and will provide incentive for valve to get their ass in gear for tf2. If it sucks, literally nothing changes.
A shooter with "ultimate" abilities will not last. No one should be worried about Overwatch killing anything besides itself.
The part of the game which I don't like in a PvP enviroment is the non skill-based movement system of those classes who have advanced movement systems (wall climbing, flying etc), The combat looks like some sort of MMORPG PvP but in First Person perspective, with pressing buttons and the game does that entire action for you (could also be close to a MOBA), It's things like that why I prefer Quake and Tf2 over other PvP games, you don't get that same solid feel of movement or combat in other popular FPS's.
Nearly all of what you guys are saying in this thread was said By TFC players and other gamers in response to seeing TF2 material. Yet here we all are. Overwatch might be overhyped, and in the end it might just be an rpg in first person, but until any of us play it we can't know that. I get the same feelings looking at Overwatch that I did when seeing TF2. Looks cool, some really cool mechanics, a bit gimmicky, but has an awesome core concept. It isnt going to be TF3. But it might offer a unique and fun experience, and since it is a Blizzard game it will have a huge audience, be even more hyped—and since it is their only FPS—might recieve some tender love and care in the comp/support department.
etherWTF is that English accent on the girl.

Following what Bloodsire said, it's a Blizzard game so it has the possibility to be the most played/watched FPS game. The fact that it's moba-esque just gives it a chance to expand it's audience.
As for how good the game is going to be, I don't know. I hope it's going to be a lot of fun and do well - but the majority of the hype comes from the fact that it's going to be a FPS, a genre that's been falling out of favor, with a huge playerbase.

I would not say that the skill ceiling of Overwatch is "crazy low" just because of the trailers. I can understand that in the gameplay trailers, the movement of the characters look pretty basic, but i think it's just to show the abilities of the classes, and not what you can actually do with them. Like you don't see the crazy b-hoppings in the half life 1 teaser or the crazy movements in the quake 3 arena trailer. We should wait for the game to actually come out because judging it.

Push button to receive free height advantage for zero penalties seems like a dumb mechanic aimed at casual players; which is fine, but it does lower the skill ceiling quite a bit.
Also Reaper's ulti for example allows him to be invulnerable and it auto aims increased damage shots for a set duration of time, which boils down to *push button to receive 4k*. Skill my arse.
A lot of characters have dumb abilities and design choices at the moment, I won't bash them too much as we haven't even got an open beta to form opinions on.
People look at some of the ultis and think "well the medic can make you invulnerable, deal triple damage and loads of other stuff!" but that's a poor comparison imo. Take 6s for example. A Medic can count Uber to judge roughly when the other team will have their charge, and if your Scout or whatever sees them run Kritz then you take that into account and play around it. In OW every character has an ulti that charges based on damage dealt, making it pretty much impossible to use your gamesense or anything to judge when their Reaper can fuck you over, or that jetpack chick can gain height for free and rain down a metric fuck ton of rockets that make the Beggar's Bazooka seem as precice as a laser. It's like trying to tell whether or not a Buff Banner soldier has his charge or not, but everyone has one. The skill ceiling is crazy low imo.
