How are valve and the community initially going to differentiate pub players who have never played comp before and open + (or even ugc) players in skill difference? Or is it just going to be a free for all fuck fest for a few weeks?
Would love to see the traffic stats for today, now that this is the topmost post on r/tf2 (and on reddit's frontpage). *pokes enigma*

There's a lot more questions than just that. How will that quantify skill/rank? Will it be by class? Will it be overall wins/kdr? How do you choose who is playing what class? It's unreasonable to expect everyone to be good with every class in an fps compared to playing support vs core in dota. What if the someone leaves? In CSGO you're fucked. Will it be the same here? It will be a much bigger deal if your medic leaves. Weapon bans? Hat bans? Those are what I've thought of in about 30 seconds. I bet there are a dozen more, and I highly doubt Valve can handle implementing this effectively considering it seems like all of their talent is working on Dota 2.

Great news! I guess they're realising that competitive is a big part of what the game is now that more players have a lot of experience.
I actually just realized that the chances of TF2 being ported to source2 are much higher now they are introducing stuff like matchmaking, this makes me even more hyped

is there context here to determine whether "soon" means hours/days vs weeks/months?

"soon" on hlds is almost always "later today", and if it's not they make a followup (except for like one exception)
Yes, expect the update within the next hour or two.
Don't get your hopes up, but there's at least an obscure chance that it's something fucking fantastic.
Patch notes are out, await changelog guy to do his thing.
Changelog says fixes, medals, batter's helm style, and localization.

The HLDS mailing list is where wickedplayer494 gets the patch notes from, and it's how he gets them so quickly. Anyone can subscribe to it to be notified of TF2 updates.
