But my question is: when it "converts" to a lossless file like .flac or .wav, is it really getting the audio quality? My fear is that it takes the same cut-off .mp3 and just turns it into another file type, being no higher quality-wise from a regular .mp3. Is there a way to find out what the actual audio quality is?

I tested it by looking up literally "the worst quality" on youtube and it gave me the same bitrate as another song that had 720p: 1536 Kbps

You can't convert an mp3 into a flac and get more quality. Not really at least. The program doesn't know what's supposed to be inbetween. It can try to fill in the gaps but it will never be true flac or wav.

when you convert a lossy file to a lossless codec it doesn't suddenly remember what was lost compressing the audio, you just end up with a larger file that sounds exactly the same

mp3 doesn't necessarily have shit quality, its just lossy.

iirc youtube 1080p is mp3 with 192kbps bitrate
as has been said before that is the maximum quality you can get out of it (unless of course they upped the audio bitrate for higher resolution videos like 4k)

If you're converting files, use foobar; it has the feature built in. I could write a novel about this, but it depends entirely on what kind of gear you have, how the music was recorded, and what kind of background you have with these things
it's not hard to pass double blinds for distinguishing flacs from 320/v0 mp3s for people who have higher end equipment and know what audio compression sounds like, but yes for someone who has to make a thread on tftv to try and figure this out they probably will never notice the difference
