you what, they have been using so many mercs that it'd be pretty cheeky to call that scrimming

I just cant agree with this "But if Froyotech do win (and they very well might!), they won’t just be the best team in the world. They’ll be the uncontested best team of all time." for as long as I remember i49 Epsilon, which for me is still the most dominant team as long as they were in the active, that team was a beauty to watch.

I can't agree with you there. While I too think it'd be very silly to call froyo the "best team ever" if they win i55, I think it's just as silly to call i49 Epsi the best - for the exact same reason.

i46 Mixup, i49 Epsi, and i52 Froyo all have one thing in common: They have never faced another super team (or really any team with a roster comparable to their own). Even before those lans happened, you knew who was going to win. All 3 of those teams were head and shoulders above everyone else at their respective lans.

That said, I was pretty hyped (ok not really, I don't get hyped about tf2, but you get what I mean) for i55, since it was shaping up to the first international tf2lan where first place might be a question. While it sucks that SDB, Hys, and Decimate are unable to go, there are still a lot of unknowns, and because of that, I don't think there is one obvious first place team. It's unfortunate that we won't see SDB's unique and insane play-style on lan ping, but this could actually be pretty good, and might even answer some questions.

Is ascent actually good or are they just used to playing froyo?
How many times will euro casters say "duwatner" and "hayche pee?"
Can clockwork carry ash?
Can kaidus make mike and knox lose?
Who will run in and die the most? Kaidus? Alfa? Nico? It's gonna be a nail biter.
Who is sideshow really? Are we sure he isn't a girl gamer using a voice changer? What is his/her phone number? (deadbolt wants to know)

The answers to these questions and more to be revealed at i55.

Great work on the wrap up! This I-LAN is going to be amazing, shame no ShaDowBurn for lan, but I still think europe has a big chance to take this home with reason, Only obstacle is Froyotech.

You have to be joking right? Even excluding my own bias, from someone that was playing at the event - the teams that won i46, i49 and i52 weren't "head and shoulders" above the rest by any stretch of the imagination. That is one of the main draws of repeated intercontinental lans in the first place - 3 years in a row there have been tournaments that any of the top teams could have walked away with on the day, and that fact leads to some of the best & most competitive tf2 played each year. Hopefully i55 is the same, and I'm super jealous of everyone lucky enough to go this year.

People that act like it was super obvious that Froyo was gonna win clearly don't remember how tense and exciting the two days before the final were. There are teams that are favorited and might even be a slightly better team in terms of skill, but that doesn't mean the outcome is set in stone. A lucky pick or two to change the momentum, a player catching fire, a bad map. The skill level gap is so small with the top teams that it can take very little to make a match go the other way.

And for what it's worth, that's exactly why I said that Froyo will be the best team of all time if they win i55. There's no doubt that different teams (like Mixup and Epsi) have been extremely dominant in their times. But if Froyotech win i55, they will have gone above and beyond what any other team has done: winning 4 ESEA seasons (3 of them on LAN), GXL, i52 and i55... That would prove that they consistently have that small yet significant edge over other top teams. And in a game where there have been a myriad of superteams with periods of dominance spanning months, not years, that consistency Froyotech have the change to prove is vitally important to being named GOAT.

However...

Athough Froyotech looked like slim favorites going into i52, I don't think that's necessarily the case this time around. nerdRage and Reason both look really good, while Ascent with Engima has a lot of potential too. And of course I would love to see TLR prove that roster mishaps haven't hurt them. We'll see, but I think i55 could have a lot of surprises in store for us.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they just breezed through everyone - and I'm definitely not about to act like I know more than someone who was actually playing against the teams at i49 and i52. i52 definitely had some of the best tf2 I've ever seen. You guys were especially awesome, and I remember being blown away by how well IM did at i49, and being impressed with you specifically as well.

I'm saying the roster they were working with was on a different level. Just like the i49 epsilon and the i46 mixup rosters. Obviously you can't just write down names and play rock paper scissors with rosters to determine the strength of a team (if it were that linear there'd be no point in playing). At the same time, from my narrow spectator view, certain things seemed clear. While there were clutch plays being made left and right from all players, clock and b4nny showed up as easily the most dominant scout pair at that lan - and it looked like the rest of froyo was playing playing as well or better than any of their counterparts on other teams.

I don't want to get into semantics or argue that point though, because, as I said: You were there. You also have played this game in much greater volume and at much higher levels than I have. It'd be really presumptuous of me to argue something like this in depth with you in a public forum, even if I think I could present some valid reasoning to support (but not necessarily prove outright) my opinion.

That aside, personally my favorite games to watch at i52 were between you guys, mixup, and epsi - hands down.

Don't take this as an attack on your write up, cause it isn't. Winningest =/= best. I don't necessarily think froyo isn't the best team to ever play, but calling froyo the best with the reasoning that they win i55 would be like saying Harb was the undisputed best tf2 player up to s12 because he had more lan wins than anyone else, or like saying Bill Russel is far superior to Michael Jordan (or any player since) because he has 11 rings and Jordan only has 6.

you're right to say that winningest != best, but at the same time, the best teams are also usually the winningest. do you really think either of the 2 old superteams (i46 Mix^ and i49 Epsi) would beat Froyo at their prime? who do you think is the best team of all time if not Froyo?

Froyo wasn't dominanting at i52, they got third in the group stages and the only roll was the grand finals and reason.

I46 mixup and i49 epsilon actually were a cut above though.

Froyo wasn't "dominating" but they were the favorite for me and i am pretty sure most people who are unbaised of their continent. There was also some pretty bad jet lag for the Americans on the group stage day froyo did get 3rd in group but mixup got 5th both 2 spots lower than they actually placed in the tournement. iirc though the Austrailians came early so they weren't affected but maybe that was only i49.

saying that Froyo didnt dominate i52 because they lost in groups isn't really a substantiated claim, especially when you look at how hard they rolled when it mattered

Wasn't there only like a single map between the American and European teams at i46 that was even remotely close. LG vs. Epsilon in LBF I think? (Are there results anywhere so I can doublecheck this.) Seems pretty unfair to say that Mixup and LG weren't absolutely dominant at i46 lol.

nah there were a bunch of close matches but epsilon got bopped in most of their matches vs NA (the one you mentioned excluded)

the other eu teams did better

fatswimdude4812622Froyo wasn't dominanting at i52, they got third in the group stages and the only roll was the grand finals and reason.

I46 mixup and i49 epsilon actually were a cut above though.

saying that Froyo didnt dominate i52 because they lost in groups isn't really a substantiated claim, especially when you look at how hard they rolled when it mattered

Take into consideration Americans got there pretty late and whatnot
