A Newbie Plea

Hi. I'm new. I joined the Newbie Mix group a few weeks ago, and discovered that 6's is the most fun part of TF2 I've ever experienced. I learned a lot, and I hope I can continue to. That's where you guys come in.

As much fun as it is to learn this new format, there seem to be a lack of coaches, and I know this community can produce them. We want to learn! We want to play! There are many of us still discovering this game and how amazing it can be, I really hope we can keep the door open for something so integral to a positive newbie experience. Please consider coaching, and helping out some of us TF2children; I'd love to keep fragging, and keep learning.

PS
Thank you to those who organize and run this every week. It's absolutely appreciated.

Glad that you like 6vs6. OP I have to let you in on a secret -- 6vs6 is the best & most fun form of tf2 possible.

I've been coaching a bit, it's a pretty good time. I haven't had a bad experience so far. I got a little burnt out on playing TF2 seriously, but it's nearly a different game when you're healing your team and they have NO idea how to play and you have to teach them.

I actually coached for the first time last night, was very enjoyable. I plan on doing it more and encourage experienced players to try coaching.

aim-samifacesnipThe main reason why no one wants to coach is because you guys completely disregard anything that someone tells you, and its like you bang your head on a brick wall when you continuously do it.

Theres a reason people in prem/invite have over 4k hours in this game. It takes time to get good or even decent. Dont expect people to instantly learn and remember shit. Asshole.

Most people aren't cut out for teaching. They don't understand how to effectively present information to others nor do they have any patience.

I remember aim happened to be my first coach in newbie mixes, he didn't really talk much and he just left after the game finished without telling us what we could improve on or anything.

Thank you for the kind post samiface,
Every week, Kevin, Myself, the other admins, and some dedicated newbie mixers do our best to get coaches, but it is true that at times it can be hard convincing high level coaches to spend their Friday nights at newbie mixes.
We are currently offering rewards for coaches who have IM or higher experience (as stated in this post by Kevin: http://www.teamfortress.tv/27592/newbie-mix-coaching-incentives), which may help the supply. I truly thank the bunch of you that come out every week to coach, along with the dedicated newbies who come out to play every week.

Alright there's no point in even arguing in this if you are going to tell a blatant lie. When you tell a guy to not jump in repeatedly, and just spam. Yet he still bombs in and dies. Then you tell him just bomb some place, in this example bomb hut instead of point on snakewater second. He still bombs into them and die after a 2nd time. Its like pulling teeth man. I'm not saying I am perfect or anything but you some of you guys just don't listen.

Then you have the guy who plays scout like hes the hottest shit on the block taking multiple 1v1's after you say don't do it unless you have an advantage, doesn't listen and just dies. I went to the point of just walling for my student's and telling them they don't have uber ad and to hold back, team just wipes to uber.

Sounds like you lost your patience.

Some of these people have NO competitive experience. We're trying to teach the game to a huge new population of gamers, and they're mostly eager to learn.

So if you find they aren't listening.. stay til the end of the match, and tell them what they did wrong! Say listen, I was telling you to not jump in all the time, but you did it anyway, and you were just always dead. You should try to really concentrate on that one thing, etc. YOU'RE the teacher, YOU'RE the Invite/IM player, you can tell them (in a reasonable and not shitty way) how they fucked up. That's how people learn, by making mistakes.

In coaching, like in teaching any other thing, some people have great patience and some don't. It sounds like you had a short fuse.

Anyone with a couple seasons of esea experience should be encouraged to coach, even if its only open experience. The amount of IM+ players that want to coach newbie mixes is (seemingly) very few. For a lot of open players, it could be valuable experience for them as well, being able to explain the game to someone who doesn't understand it could help the coach better understand the game themselves. So essentially, I'm confident if you asked a couple teams of open players to coach, they would certainly be able to adequately provide what's needed.

There's a job for the coach to make sure they are teaching the players, but it's also upon the players to actually listen to the advice and try to apply it. Sometimes the players coming there to learn forget that.

not sure how they determine what etf2l div experience you need, but people like sideshow and ond_kaja have coached before.

I like coaching, but it's not something I can do every week.

In the main, I find it's best to just give each person a few simple responsibilities, and then I spend some time watching them to make sure they're at least attempting to carry these out and if not I attempt to shame them into conformity or just repeat myself over and over until they finally do the desired thing lol.

The most important thing is helping them to recognize when it is and is not OK to die and when they shouldn't care if they die or not - and where best to stand given that particular situation. Then you shame them if they still fail. I don't really worry about individual situations and actions outside of that - because they will basically have to be taken pure and learned through experience. You can tell a guy "you should do x there" but it won't really make sense to them - they don't know why, typically, they should be doing x, and they won't have the experience to recognize that the situation is such that they should do "x" when it happens again in the future.

I also try to foist responsibilities onto the flank players - making sure they try to keep each other in line so you don't have scouts trying to peek doors constantly.

I also spend the first 1-2 rounds calling exclusively *or* for a change of pace let them hang on their own for a round or 2, particularly if it's a later mix, to see if they attempt to apply things other coaches have taught them - then call exclusively for a round or two. In part to provide them with an example of *why* a leader is needed.

For an example of shaming, I'll ask the medic if they know how to keep track of ubers - usually they say yes actually. Sometimes you'll get the poor guy or gal that says "I have no idea what I'm doing" and I go a bit more in-depth and take it easier on them. But if they *do* say yes, I'll ask them what ubers are like *constantly* and if they're wrong or don't know I chastise them about how it's their "only" job lol. Usually it works.
