i55 Final Summary

As the cheers of the crowd subside at Insomnia55, we have a final summary of the tournament for your reading pleasure.

Summary

Groups

Insomnia55 began with the most anticipated matchup of the tournament between ETF2L winners Reason Gaming and ESEA winners and defending champions froyotech, but people's expectations were quickly crushed as froyotech rolled the match, setting the mood as Reason crashed to the bottom of the invite group and froyotech rolled to the top. Reason's European rivals stepped up, with The Last Resort and nerdRage.tf2 hot on the heels of froyotech. Meanwhile, froyotech's North American rival Ascent did not impress either, tying with Reason in their matchup and only finishing ahead of them by virtue of a tiebreaker. Danger Dogs were the clear loser, only taking one round out of all their matchups.

Main Brackets

There were not many surprises with the invite teams making it past the first round without much trouble. Danger Dogs were the first to be knocked down to the lower bracket, and Reason took revenge on Ascent for their earlier tie by knocking them down as well. froyotech then knocked down Reason, nerdRage.tf2 knocked down The Last Resort, and both advanced to the upper final. In a stunning series, nerdRage.tf2 came back from the brink of defeat to win an incredibly close series, handing froyotech their first best-of-three loss on LAN, securing their spot in the grand final while forcing froyotech on the harder path to victory.

In the lower bracket, Danger Dogs completed their unimpressive run by losing to Saints, thus not making the top 6. The first major matchup of the lower bracket was between The Last Resort and Ascent, with Ascent coming out on top of the intercontinental team, eliminating them. They then advanced to meet Reason, with the winner booking their place in the lower final against froyotech. A very close series takes a weird turn when the longest round of the tournament ends in a stalemate due to the round timer, leaving both teams to restart with very little time left. Reason, who had been clearly behind, quickly took advantage of this, crushing Ascent and winning the round with one second left, thus securing their place in the lower final by the slimmest of margins.

Bracket Finals

Only three finalists remained standing as the final day began. Reason Gaming went up against froyotech in the lower final, with both hoping to secure the second spot in the grand finals and came out to a roaring start by winning their map pick of Badlands, but froyotech stepped up to win Gullywash and Product to advance to the grand finals. nerdRage.tf2 was waiting there for them, having beaten them the previous day in a stunning series. nerdRage struck first by winning their map pick of Sunshine in overtime, but froyotech recovered quickly and were in the driving seat for the rest of the series, taking Product to tie the series and then crushing nerdRage on Snakewater and Process. Thus, they were crowned the champions of Insomnia55, becoming the first team to win back-to-back intercontinental tournaments and maintaining a legendary LAN win streak.

Thanks to everyone for tolerating my terrible summaries accompanied by bad editing throughout this weekend. I'll try to improve for next time, if I'm not fired outright for this performance.

Of course, there's a need for a big shoutout list. Thanks to:

  • the production team at Insomnia55, who did an absolutely amazing job and invested so much to make this happen. I'll highlight dashner specifically because the man has poured in his life's essence into making this the best event it could be, and deserves nothing more than our highest praises.
  • the teams themselves for giving us some amazing action. I'm still regretting that I was unable to watch the group stages as they happened live, but I could not imagine anything being even better than what we saw in the bracket where everyone played insanely well. Of course, there can be only one champion, and froyotech took that title pretty convincingly, so huge congratulations to them.
  • the sponsors and supporters: Multiplay, YoYoTech, backpack.tf, Bobsplosion, SweetStakes.tf, and even more that I'm forgetting. It took a lot to make this a great event, and you really helped it get to where it went.
  • the other websites, in particular Comp.tf and Saloon.tf. Comp.tf was a great resource throughout the event, keeping up-to-date with all the details, and Saloon.tf made everyone a hell of a lot more lively.
  • the community. You are why everyone behind-the-scenes puts in the amount of effort that they do to put on a good show, and even though I was across the Atlantic shut into my room the past two days, I could feel your hype even more than ever on the forums, on Twitter, in stream chat, and everywhere else.

We should all be proud to be a competitive TF2 fan today, because this weekend we showed the world the best we have to offer, and we're only just starting to unlock our full potential.

I woke up this morning with a bad taste in my mouth.

just when i turned on my PC to watch the VOD of the stream, my nausea intensified and i rushed to the bathroom and puked my guts out.

that's when i knew nerdrage had lost...

What an awesome i-series to watch. Each team has always been strongly contested. i46 Mix^ were very close with LG. i49 Epsilon had damn close games with HRG + Broder. i52 Froyo were much more contested outside of the final, and even i55 Froyo lost a b03 to nR and were 1 golden cap round from being knocked out by [R]eason on Gullywash. Grats to Froyo in the end though.

It would be great to see 2 international tournaments a year for TF2. Whether it's in NA somewhere or maybe a cheaper country to host it in Europe. There must be a thread somewhere on that. Hopefully matchmaking brings more hype + $

yeah after a tournament like this, peaks at 8-9k viewers and 10000£ raised without the support of any big company (no offense there) i don't see why nobody invests in TF2 given the community is so supportive and ready to pay to make good things happen. Invest and you won't be disappointed!!

@tsc : you put Product instead of Viaduct when telling about reason vs froyo

What a great work on cameras and the outro, sadly I lost the first day and the muted parts on twitch are kinda annoying, but with i49 this one with most feels.

TF2 ain't dead.

EDIT: Also, anyone knows where to find all photos taken by tagg?
