i mean its not like fundraisers like this arent compensating people as well. people are given time to play with the players theyre donating to and some mentor time among other things. its like any professional sport, why do people pay to go seem other people play, because they enjoy it and they feel like they should help support something they enjoy

The only thing potentially "wrong" with a donation drive is when the donatee is misrepresenting their financial situation. You may believe that there is some arbitrary line at 100 hours per 2 weeks where you should divert some of that time to working, others may believe that if you're playing videogames at all it's irresponsible to ask for money, but as long as there's no deception involved there's nothing really morally wrong with saying that "it's not worth it to work", or "you can't find a job", or "you only want to put so many hours into searching for work", but "hey, if you're okay with this and you want to see me have or do x, give me money".

A person's financial situation is what is, and if you're fine with donating to someone despite that then you're not bring swindled or whatever.

if people had a sentence or two in their fundraiser posts saying "this is why i cant raise the money myself" all of these complaints would not be necessary, and people wouldnt have to jump to conclusions on either side of the argument

I payed for myself to get to i55 and some people were really surprised for some reason. My favourite part is when people stream for 1 month to get donations and then never stream again or fulfill their "donations goals".

The only money I would ever donate in TF2 is for Tip of the Hats, that is in my opinion the only cause worth of donating.

Perhaps the tftv add ons was a bad example, nowhere have I dismissed the value of what you do for the tf2 community.

I have already mentioned that there are donation drives I think are worthwhile and have put money towards them myself.

However this passive aggressive guilt trip post is a bit much in away, you should only be doing these things if you feel comfortable to do so and in a financial situation to do it as well.

Again you have done far more for the community than I ever will and this post wasn't really aimed at you, I had hazy memories of a donation drive for tftv personal and thought it was not in best taste.

However it should be clear in my responses that my point is to stop the whole "buy me a new PV or send me to an event i could easily afford to get too myself" type of donation drives.

I personally think it makes more sense to put money into prizes or production than players themselves. If they think its worth the money, they'll go to the event, just like any other eSport.

IMO it's ok if you want to criticize fundraisers if they're built upon lies and deceit, but if people are honest when asking for the money they can give any reason they want to do so, and it's on people individually to decide to donate or not.

Is there any attempt to establish a minimum amount of 'work' you're morally obliged to do before you can get x amount of utility(in economical terms)? I'd be interested if you could truly rationalize that.

the actual issue is less in the act of donations, and moreso the question of honestly. I can see why people might be a bit critical about it; a long time ago (like, back when people still willingly used ustream), I know of someone that did a donation drive for a new laptop since their old one broke, except they then heavily lied to ustream admins that they were donating it all to a children's hospital so they could be front-paged and it was the most scumbag tactic I've ever seen.

I hope nobody's as terrible here, though. so long as you're informed into where your donation's going, and that's truly where it goes, what's the issue?
