No recommendations for Baccano? I feel it's a pretty good one, though the POV skipping might throw people for a loop.

wall of text incoming

Hunter x Hunter (2011) (it's the best. episode number is high but it's enjoyable for every minute of it. animation, ost, characters and story are all A+++)
Your Lie in April (best i've seen in recent memory. it's simply beautiful.)
One Punch Man (what's currently popular and it's definitely popular for a reason (it's great))
Welcome to the NHK (unbelievably incredible and the message is absolutely amazing.)
Fate/ series (unlimited blade works and zero, not the 2006 one)
Magi the Labyrinth/Kingdom of Magic
Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma) - (starts off weird but becomes crazy good and super hype)
The World God Only Knows (amazing OST, one of the best main characters and a really great supporting cast)

and then the always recommended but great:
Toradora (if you liked toradora, sakurasou might be up your alley.)
Code Geass (both seasons obviously)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Steins;Gate
Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (two different stories, both are incredible and worth watching,)
Durarara!! (currently 3 seasons out, it's about to get it's fourth and final one)
A Certain Magical Index / A Certain Scientific Railgun

also the monogatari series is really good but if you're not like super into anime and how weird/different it can be i'd stay away from it.

oh yes. brilliant anime. forgot that one. definitely for mature people, those shounen fuckboys won't get this anime at all.

also forgot about darker than black, durarara, death note and fate/zero, gosh my memory sucks...

wareyait also has some pretty unrecommendable shows like Angel Beats in it

i screamed internally when the creator first posted that version

it DOES say "popular"; doesn't necessarily mean it's "good".

Also, wtf at that flowchart :| that's a decent amount to read.

do0mpsycho-pass and darker than black are both amazing

amen. the use of classical literature in psycho-pass and the "villain's" general intelligence and wisdom mixed with his crazyness in a futuristic, false utopia setting in psycho-pass gives me such a weeabo boner.

and darker than black is basically electric batman. how can that NOT be awesome.

^^^^ Very mainstream thrillers, sorry

although it generally works that way, mainstream doesn't necessarily mean "bad quality". Shingeki no Kyojin's excellence is overshadowed by its popularity which obviously generates controversy and unnecessary drama/equivocated criticism.

trust me, if nobody knew about attack on titan, then no one would have anything bad to say about it. watch it please. It's not perfect because there's no perfect anime, but it sure is a great anime.

Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (Tsuiokuhen).

One of the greatest cinematic experiences to come out of Japan. You do not need to watch the Rurouni Kenshin main anime series to fully understand and appreciate this anime.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventures
Madoka Magica
Gurren Lagann
Cowboy Bebop
Berserk (edit: oh and read the manga too if you have the time)

I've been looking to try anime recently, so I decided to look for mature sci-fi series with a dark and/or psychological bent. Here's what I watched so far:

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Having grown up on merch-driven shonen series and Power Rangers, I recognized it being a bit cliche in the beginning. Halfway through it goes off the deep end, though, and that's where it shines: sci-fi psychological horror with religious undertones. The series finale and the EoE semi-retcon are equally great, each in its own twisted way. Heavily recommended.
  • Serial Experiments Lain: After NGE, this series' beginning came as a bit of a shock: the first couple of episodes are really slow paced, and that's in a pretty short series to boot. Overall, it's a great cyberpunk story with an increasingly loose grip on reality. The sound and music are of particular note here; they serve to enhance the surreal feel even further. Heavily recommended.
  • Texhnolyze: I was looking forward to seeing this, as it shared some key staff with SEL (including the writer). However, I was kind of disappointed with the sci-fi elements taking a backseat to other, vaguely explained concepts. Also, if SEL started off slow, this one starts SUPER slow; expect excessive meandering for several episodes. The plot follows several characters at once and feels a bit disjointed. It's alright if you want something really odd and depressing.
  • Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex: I was already a fan of the first movie, but it felt super condensed. Wanting more, I then tried getting into the original manga, but it seems to carry a completely different tone and is way too wordy. This series is in the sweet spot: it takes just enough time to explain things, but is also livelier than the film (Batou in particular doesn't seem like a mere male counterpart to Motoko anymore). There's a lot going on here: memory hacking, espionage, character drama, adorable spider-like tanks(!), and a pinch of political intrigue. It's amazing. Watch it.

By the way, I'm open to suggestions in the same vein. I already plan on watching Cowboy Bebop, Psycho-Pass, Monster, Berserk and 2nd GIG. I also watched Akira, of course.

calling bs. My old housemates made me watch that with them and I didn't enjoy it at all. Perfectly reasonable that someone might criticise it.

subjective likes and dislikes do not account into criticism. real criticism is funded in the objective analysis into a work's fundamental characteristics in a given medium, which literally nobody does. someone can like something bad just as much someone can dislike something good. the likes and dislikes do not define an anime in its essence, just its general popularity and how its viewed by the media.

also, with just the little information you released, i can pretty much think about plenty of reasons why you wouldn't like it that doesn't include the anime itself being bad...not that i feel like i should expand on this.
