Not_MatlockYeah, they didn't exactly explain his motivation for turning to the dark side very well. I'm guessing they're saving it for a later movie (kind of like how anakin's motivations for turning to the dark side weren't explained until the prequels). However, it doesn't make much sense to do it way way since Vader was originally just the 'fallen bad guy' in the original trilogy, and then later revealed to be Luke's father, whereas Ren is immediately announced as Han and Leia's son. You can't drop a bombshell like that without providing a decent explanation as the WHY he went all evil.
I'm kinda hoping some of the expanded universe lore ties into this with the whole Sith tomb being underneath the jedi academy that causes Ren to fall the the dark side.
i think its reasonable to expect that luke will explain what happened early 8

It felt like a movie with star wars characters but not a star wars movie. I am pretty into star wars and the story so the regurgitated death star plot and the final battle etc felt like a copy of ep 4 and 6. Plot wise an utter disappointment. Also Rey going from 0 force ability to force pulling the lightsaber and holding her own vs kylo was not congruent with anything previously shown in the star wars movies. The story telling was good but the story was bad. Honestly everything was so predictable scene to scene and the death star v3 plot was cancer. Good movie but not a star wars movie

AndKenneth[spoiler]really didn't like it how the multiple billions of people (tens of billions?) were killed in one instant by this big ass deathplanetkillerstar 5000, and it all just kinda... happens. The whole thing comes up so quick. Suddenly billions are dead and we care about freaking none of them.
They couldn't even put a single character we cared about on those planets. It made the whole moment way less impact than it should have been. Compare it to the first use of the death star in the original trilogy there was at least an intense personal connection - one of the main characters just had their homeworld destroyed.
Also when the dude took off his mask my friend next to me said "ew put it back on" which I thought was pretty on point. In general the whole character (who I'm calling emo ren now) was all like "mom, dad, you just don't understand, the darkside is way cooler I mean come on the light side is just so lame."
I could not agree more, just a totally empty plot point that makes the movie seem rushed and lacks the emotional response of all the other films. I was pretty annoyed by the unexplained characters and republic/resistance/firstorder. I really enjoyed the EU so I could be biased but I felt like the plot was bad.

The way I understood it was that Kylo was not as powerful as he feels like he should have been as a descendant of Anakin, and turned to dark side for the cheap power. Like in the scene where Kylo is trying to get the map out of Rey and she says that he is afraid of not being as powerful as Darth Vader or something

I really enjoyed the movie overall. I felt the script was a little poor at times/heavy handed, mainly how han and leia kept saying "our son" even though they both quite obviously knew who they would mean if they said "him". Incredibly nitpicky of me but w/e. I don't know why but I feel like they really downplayed Han's death and made it not seem like as big a deal as it should have been made out to be. Like Chewie literally just lost his best friend and Leia lost the father of her son, and all they did was a couple tears and a hug then it's back on the road. I really enjoyed the fact that Kylo actually showed his anger and took it out on shit with his lightsaber though. It's what I think Anakin would have done had he turned earlier/not been with Obi Wan so much, it felt like Kylo's character was a lot more like a young Anakin that Kylo really knew.
The casting was also on point as well, I really loved the casting of Finn and Rey, they seemed pretty much perfect from the start. With Kylo though it took me a few minutes after seeing him properly I genuinely liked him, they didn't give him any deformities/scars or w/e to alienate or dehumanize him. He just looks like a young guy that's in over his head. I think the fact that he is just a normal looking person will annoy people, they would have been expecting some sort of monster under the mask.
My two cents.

Pros
- Amazing visuals, i thought that the sets were amazing and that there wasn't to much cgi like in the prequels (which i do not hate like other allhole star wars fans)
- The Characters were very great the cast was as likeable as in the original trilogy and have some more interesting back stories to learn about in the rest of the trilogy
- The Lightsaber Duels at the end were amazing they showed how much the fight takes a toll on the fighters as it goes on and i loved how the characters got small hits on eachother throughout.
Cons
- Alot of things happened that make very little sense just to have the plot progress like how Ren escapes using the mind trick which is a pretty advances technique as well as using the force of the saber when Kylo was and beating him. She has had no training as a jedi it really makes zero sense for her to be able to use those abilities this early after discovering he powers.
- I have no idea how Maz obtained the lightsaber, it was dropped into the cloud city atmosphere when lukes hand was cut off my vader in episode.
- It also makes no sense how Finn was able to realize that the order was evil and try to escape and that he was the only one to do it as well
- I just wish Poe was in it more i thought he was super cool and he was really only in the begining and breifly when they get back to the base

I think the best way to sum up this movie is that it was fun - the visuals were great, the fights exciting and this was actually the first time the lightsabers didn´t seem like toys but actually had me felling "yeah i can see someone getting killed by that thing".
What i really didn´t like about this movie is that the only real new character is Fin. Besides him you have:
Rey aka Luke ( I mean really? Living on a desert planet, working a shitty job and then randomly having the force- sounds really familiar)
BB8 aka R2 ( just a comic relief droid, nothing much more to him )
Kylo Ren aka Darth Vader ( and a really forgettable one at that, the costume design, besides maybe the mask, is really nothing special and without the mask he just seems like an edgy teenager that is motivated by just doing the opposite of what his partents want him to do ; and tbh even hayden christensen made for a more convincing bad guy imo)
And then of course Han and Chewie
Besides the characters being reused, other parts of the original trilogy were reused to the point where its just not an hommage anymore ( similiar to Toy Story 3, good movie but its basically Toy Story 2)
Of course the Death Star scene, down to it being destroyed by an X-Wing attack
The mos eisley cantina scene where it felt like they where doing the excact same camera shots, from panning to close ups
The bad guy turning out to be a relevant of one of the main characters
Overall the movie was fun but you can really tell that they were just playing it safe, there was really nothing new, which is kinda disappointing

Amazing movie. The plot is nothing special/new but the characters really carry the movie, all of them are so likable, especially Finn (one of the best main characters I've seen in a long time) and Han who felt EXACTLY like he did in the old movies. I actually teared up when Han was killed, which hasn't happened to me while watching a movie in so long. I didn't watch any trailers and I completely avoided all spoilers so the first viewing was amazing.

It took 2 movies for Luke to even have enough force power to even try fighting Vader but Rey instantly figured out how to use the force. Which is what I assume he was talking about.

i still don't understand how r2 woke up from his low power mode or whatever. C-3PO mentioned him being low power mode since luke left and that he was really upset and stuff, but they never find luke. they destroy the giant planet destroyer and then he opens up the other 99% of the map. i mean the only thing i can see is that r2 was like hey they did this now i can help them find my friend but idk that seemed really poorly played out. apart from that, i really did enjoy the movie

A lot of theories think that Rey is a skywalker relative or possibly Luke's daughter. That being one of the reasons R2 activated when she arrived.

its confirmed in the movie that she is his daughter. remember the flashback of when the ship was taking off and she was screaming for it to come back? also she mentioned many times that she was "waiting for someone to come back". and yeah that does make sense, but if r2 knew they had the only missing piece of the map, he would have surely given it to them the moment he found out.

It's never actually confirmed in the movie that Rey is Luke's daughter. One could say it's hinted at plenty of times, like Maz telling Rey that what she is looking for is not in her past but her future. Even in the flashback when the ship is taking off and shes yelling at them to come back, you don't know who she is addressing that to. You do hear obi-wan speak to Rey as well, so that add some more interesting things to the mix. There are several possibilities as to who's daughter she could be (some people have suggested her being somehow an obi-wan descendant, or a solo), with Luke's being the most popular and seemingly evident thus far.
As for the R2 thing, who knows for sure, there are a lot of possibilities and reasons for how he came back to power. Will be easier once we find out more about Rey I guess.

well im pretty sure we can almost certainly write off the idea that rey is a daughter of han and leia, because of the greeting they had on the millennium falcon. also it would be pretty lame to have her be some random fucking twat they decided to throw in the story line, so she has to have some sort of relation to a different character.

I 100% agree with you about the destruction of the Republic. We hear about the republic and how they can oppose the First Order, and then like 5 minutes later they get blown up. And the only time we actually see the republic at all is WHILE it's being blown up. There was no weight there, I just didn't care as much as I should have about such a big event.
As for Kylo Ren, I actually really really enjoy how they've decided to play him. I think lots of people were expecting a badass Vader 2.0, but he is something new. I had the same initial reaction you did. There's a scene when he's praying to Vader's mask and apologizing because he feels the call to the light, and I think to myself "man, our bad guy can't even fully commit to being a bad guy?!". Later, when he is delivered some bad news, he throws a tantrum and slices up a computer, when someone like Vader would've choked the guy to death with the force. And then he takes his mask off and we don't see some badass, we see a young kid, and moments later he is called out by Rey for being afraid. That's when it started to occur to me that he's NOT supposed to be some badass sith. He's a kid, and he's conflicted. But when he kills Han Solo, his dad, he finally COMMITS to the dark side. His final battle with Rey, he gets some gnarly slashes to his face. And his part in the movie ends with Snoke deciding to finally finish Ren's training.
So what we have in Episode VII is a young, conflicted, untrained Sith. And I'm hoping that in the next movie (or by the end of the trilogy), he becomes the badass, scarred up and gnarly looking, evil bastard of a Sith that he was posing as for the beginning of The Force Awakens.
I checked out a review, and a good point was brought up comparing Vader and Ren. At the end of Episode IV, we know next to nothing about Vader he's essentially a slightly more badass henchman in a black suit. At the end of Episode VII, we know so much more about Kylo Ren. I love Vader as a villain, but Kylo Ren is turning out to be a much more interesting and potentially better villain.
Also, is anyone else disappointed that Snoke is CGI? I want practical effects for the big baddy :(

A lot of theories think that Rey is a skywalker relative or possibly Luke's daughter. That being one of the reasons R2 activated when she arrived.

That was confirmed to be false. Kylo Ren was in the middle of saying "Come fight me" when he was damaged. One of Kylo Ren's lines when hit is "curses". So he said "come fight me, curses"
