BonafideThis is getting insane reviews and it's at 90% sale, probably worth checking out http://store.steampowered.com/app/225080
I think it's because TotalBiscuit declared this his game of the year 2013. I thought it was a beautiful looking game that had a generic story which is filled to the brim with nonsensical moments and ultra convenient plot devices.
Also, I thought the Beginners Guide was a pretentious pile of garbage. The Stanley Parable is a much better pickup if you want a game that isn't actually a game.
Undertale, Lisa, Cave Story+, Bastion, and many others already suggested in this thread have fun gameplay and imaginative stories.

fallout 1 and 2 are 5 bucks for both of them and are really good isometric RPG's. fallout fixt and killap's restoration project fix a lot of the problems with both games.

What I'm worried about is the number of people playing. Is the game still well populated?

The multiplayer is great* and I think it has one of the better single player experiences in the franchise. If you enjoyed other games in the franchise it's a pretty safe bet you'll enjoy this one. Similar to 4 there's a pretty extensive modding community as well.
(*) The multiplayer, conceptually, is a lot of fun. However, the game utilizes peer-to-peer connections and 'hacking' (read: script kiddies, modding) is pretty rampant. That being said, there is still the opportunity to have a lot of fun with friends and smaller communities of folks.

Wolfenstein: The new order and Old Blood are both amazing single player fps games, up there with Halo for me. Would highly recommend.

Wolfenstein: The New Order & Old Blood are good if you like shoot em up FPS games. Most quake/doom players enjoy them.
Risk Factions is a fun virtual board game, worth playing imo.
If you have 2 or 3 friends i'd recomend Castle Crashers, it can be a great multiplayer experience. Me & my college buddies play it alot, its a big immature in humor but is fun to drink and play.

Games that havent been mentioned I'd recommend to anyone looking for a good game would be
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition - Journey/RPG/Action (get the PC fixes though)
Antichamber - FPS exploration/puzzle
Magicka - DnD spells on drugs co-op, wouldnt recommend playing alone
Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Oldschool shooter
Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition - Oldschool shooter/cyberpunk with a more story driven narrative
Games that have been mentioned I'd recommend to anyone looking for a good game would be
Undertale - Extremely well done indie RPG/exploration game
Fallout 1/2 - Oldschool non-forgiving RPG
Fallout New Vegas - Somewhat more forgiving RPG but also aged better, would recommend if its your first fallout

fallout new vegas is a great game but terribly terribly buggy. I cant count how many times Ive done some stupid shit super early in the game and killed my rep with a faction, making it impossible to progress in the story.
theres also been times when I havent encountered a certain faction and immediately been shot at.

Just bought the original Fallout and Fallout 2, can anyone direct me to the restoration patches etc? Don't want to mess with the games too much, just make them play on modern resolutions/fix bugs.

Excellent underwater survival, though it's still in early development.

there should be options during the install to select what you want, just select the bug fixes and none of the gameplay changes (though i would reccomend adding the cut content in, its very good)

same thing with this, there will be options to select during the install that will let you select what you want added/removed.
if you need help feel free to add me.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was incredible for me as well, I found it to be one of the games that has emotionally affected me the most, and there's no dialogue at all, just a made up almost sims language, characters' thoughts are conveyed through their tone of voice and expressions, and it left a lasting impression on me
one of the best story driven singleplayer games I've played in years
you need a controller for it though
I added you aimanfire, accept and I'll gift you brothers

Dishonored is 75% off, one of my favourite (if not my favourite) single player games. If you're into atmospheric stealth-action games, you won't be disappointed.
Plus the sequel was announced recently and is said to be realeased spring 2016.

The average concurrent players is like 70, but there's an active Discord channel where you can usually find games.
Plus it will probably pick up once matchmaking is out.

I can't believe that even after officially releasing it, they didn't put Nuclear Throne on sale, I would absolutely recommend it
