We were going to meet Justice Scalia on my AP Gov field study. Despite me not agreeing personally with some of his decisions, from what I had heard from previous groups of students (and from our teacher, who was great friends with him) he was an great person to interview. Very personable, surprisingly. Even if I disagree with his conservative viewpoint on the judiciary's purpose in the government, and some of his decisions, I still intensely respect the man.

But he did say that it's totally fine to kill innocent people, which makes it super hard to pity him.

I would be just as happy if he had just left the SCOTUS and lived a happy retirement. I'm simply excited that we can get a new judge because of his death, not happy that his life is over.

He spent a large portion of his life invalidating the lives of others through his decisions and some people are happy to see him gone. I think you're being naive if people wouldn't be happy to see him gone. Do people cheer when dictators and murderers die? Yes they do, because they're gone and they didn't like them.

However, I don't think he is at all comparable to a murderer or dictator just illustrating the comparison.

Seems like you are taking it a little out of context. That quote to me says that he meant that innocent people do end up being wrongly convicted in any justice system and there's nothing that can be done. Which is true.

I mean in general it's not healthy to actively enjoy someone's death, but also it's hard to feel sympathetic for a dude who tried to, among other things, defend the death penalty being applied onto literal children

Even if I didn't like Scalia he was right on this point as inadvertently innocent people will be punished and it is not unconstitutional.

But the death penalty. He's saying that it's perfectly fine to kill the innocent to protect the public. And yes, innocent people will be punished, but they shouldn't be killed in cold blood

See, I think there's a disconnect here.

I don't think people are actively happy that this person has died. I mean, there are people I hate, but I don't really want them to be dead, you know?

However, since Supreme Justices serve for life, dying is the only way for people who are affected by Scalia's conservative politics and judgements to be free of his authority.

So when people are like "yay! he's dead!", they're not necessary happy that he died, instead they're happy that he doesn't get to have a say in one of the most powerful legal institutions in America with a political viewpoint that is very conservative.

I mean okay some people are probably happy that he's dead, but I think that the majority of people are instead happy that he no longer has his position, and due to said position, the only way for him to be gone is, well. Him to be dead.
