I have just over 600 hrs in the game, and I was doing well as demoman on a pub. I had no hats on demoman, but apparently people thought I was cheating? Just because you have no hats doesn't mean that you have no skill in the game.
IMO If you have unusuals and stuff, that just means that you spend more time trading than actually playing the game.
Also it's a pub so their opinions don't matter.

It's more like "If you're investing all that money/time trading into the game, you must be good at it" what kinda retard would spend money on a game they're not good at?
Remember that this is the business model that valve has set up. Where the bare minimum is just fine and will work, but they want you to invest money into their product. The thing is, people spending money on this game has become such a standard thing to the point that if you don't have at least some hats (even a gibus and pyrovision), you stand out like a sore thumb. Although I do hate the common association that hats/expensive items = skill within a large portion of the tf2 community.
Well, you get weapons>scrap>reclaimed>refined completely for free just by playing the game, which you can then directly turn into hats via crafting or you can trade for them. It's not unreasonable to expect a correlation between having at least some cosmetic on your character and having more experience in the game, considering the game basically gives you a free hat once a month via item drops.

Or just like not wearing a hat, you're in the top 5%. The only people I see not wearing hats are those in the top teams or scrubs. That aside you're gonna end up with metal and things of worth if you "just play" the game for 6k hours. It'd be like shit talking someone for buying expensive running shoes when he runs 2 hours a day.
