Unless specified otherwise it should be dress shoes every time to an event like a wedding or a funeral.

I wear boat shoes all the time, honestly while you can get away with it (depending on how nice they look), dress shoes are recommended for super fancy events. I try to have one normal pair that looks really shitty and one nice pair so if I have to go to a semi-formal event I look okay. Boat shoes are by far my favorite shoes.

If you have the spare cash, brown leather shoes aren't terribly expensive and will work with anything short of really formal.

I'd say black goes with more colours than brown.

Black leather is more formal and less versatile. Brown is more casual and you can wear it day to day as well as for most formal events. Brown shoes and a gray suit is gonna work for the person who asked if they could wear boat shoes to the wedding.

It completely depends on the event in question.

Weddings can range from really casual to really formal. If there is a specified dress code (semi-formal, festive informal, black tie, etc) on the invitation, it's best to abide. If they didn't specify, they can't very well get angry at you. Calling and asking for the dress code is never a bad idea if you're trying to play it safe.

As for a funeral, you're there to pay your respects. Fuck what anyone thinks about what you're wearing.

If I were running an event, and someone broke the "accepted" dress code, I really wouldn't care that much unless they were making some sort of statement. I'd care more that they showed up, because I want the person there (or I wouldn't have fucking invited them).

And yes, if you're just starting to build a wardrobe, black is generally NOT the go-to. A dark navy suit and a pair of brown shoes are the best place to start.

A baptism would be fine in my opinion, anything else needs dress shoes unless stated otherwise.
