I have 2 binds: shift and a side button on my mouse. I switch between them depending on what I'm doing.

I have always used shift as well but I regret it so much now. It's complete aids when playing other games specially when shift is a movement key (for sprinting, or in the case of CS, to walk)

And it doens't really work to change push to talk because I've grown so used to it that I even press it when using voice activation.

lanskytry to play a round of mge without letting go of your push to talk bind as an example, for most people this will be very uncomfortable

I can agree with this, I still use my side of the mouse push-to-talk, but when I am in mumble with friends mgeing, if I am talking a lot during it I will do noticeably worse. It might be some combination of being distracted and holding my mouse differently, but it is noticeable

That's the big reason I switched away from push. Any amount of extra commands will deter gameplay and good comms; when I used push, I always had delayed comms and not enough comms.

If anyone has to use push (many of my friends are in noisy environments, or if you want to train for LANs), the only regularly unused fingers in the default loadout are the right thumb, ring, and pinkie, so like spaceghosts said, use the side buttons on your mouse (usually mouse3-6). Left pinky is a bad idea, because the bad boy wears out quickly (pinkie fatigue is a bitch), and you're unable to crouch/jump (which is crucial for most classes).

delpoI use voice activation + caps lock to toggle mute every time I talk because:
  • I talk to myself and have an mx blue keyboard.
  • I don't have to hold down a key to talk, only tap it once to unmute and then once to mute. Just feels a lot less constricting especially for longer comms.
  • I can tell if I'm muted or not by looking at the keyboard LED that indicates if caps lock is on or off.

This is by far the best solution I've seen. Everyone tilts, and they can just mash caps lock and mumble to themselves before calming down and getting back into the game.

DougI wonder what you would feel if you knew what your name means in portuguese...

I'm aware and (i think) it only means that in Brazilian dialect
Pinto is a popular last name in Portugal believe it or not

pintoI'm scared to use voice-activation because my mom will come into my room and yell at me for something and it would be embarrassing

I don't even live with my parents anymore so I know it's an irrational fear but someone has to know what I mean

dude i used to use voice activation and one time my mom was really pissed @ me and came in my room and yelled at me in spanish and the people i was talking to started to make fun of me and it made me feel really sad

I had a friend I used to mge a lot with and when we played out of mumble he'd usually dunk on me. However, when we were both in mumble, talking having a good time, he'd stop having good movement and always strafe to his left. I asked him if his ptt was v or something like that and he got confused and asked me how I knew. IMO m5 is the best way to go since shift can be used by other games.

I like push to talk but recently when playing OW I've noticed myself gripping my mouse slightly differently to 'help' me aim, I guess. As a result I am unable to use my normal mouse4 to PTT efficiently so I have switched to voice activity.

Discords voice activity seems to work a fair bit better than Mumble's, for what it's worth.

I have heard of a lot of people using alt or shift for PTT.

I just bind the default shift function in most games to m4 or m3 because most games dont have those bound

I know lol Im aware of the differences, I work with like 5 brazilian guys. It doesn't bother me, it has 0 negative connotation in Portugal. Much like Veado which in Portugal is simply Deer while in Brazil is also slang for faggot.

I know a guy who uses B for PTT and swears it's not at all uncomfortable for him to use space to jump while talking and using his thumb for both

Technically I also use 0 funnily enough, I use a Zowie mouse sidebutton remapped to 0 with AutoHotKey because having my mouse buttons go back or forward in Chrome every time I used my PTT got annoying

I used lshift since 2008 and recently switched to side mouse button because of OW. I'd say mouse button is pretty easy to use once you used it for a couple of days.

lanskyif you're not in a lan environment and you care about being a good player, you absolutely should be using voice activation. there's no good reason not to....

If I did that my teammates would wonder why I was suddenly comm-ing in a shrill voice about how they didn't even notice my new hairstyle today and WHY ARE YOU PLAYING THAT STUPID GAME AGAIN!?

Side mouse button with lshift as a backup like most people, but I also have the same mouse button toggle my viewmodels so it sometimes gets disorienting.

there was some horror story on r/tifu about a dude using a pedal as ptt and then when he started driving, he was talking to his mum at a red light and muscle memory kicked in

i used to use mouse4 but i realised it would fuck with my aim having to adjust my grip to press thr button so now i use control

PTT is a hassle but you gotta use it for LAN, I always found it uncomfortable no matter what button I put it on.

Time to invest in a food pedal? I feel like Shift/Ctrl/Maybe capslock are the only good keys to use because you need to take your fingers off WASD or do some spider hand stretches on the others. M4/M5 would mess up my aim.

Voice activity has the added benefit that you can't complain unless you want people to think you're an arse.

For the last few days I've been really enjoying playing pugs/scrims using voice activity (w/ a mute toggle like delpo explained in his post). I didn't really notice it when i was using PTT but a there are a lot of situations in which I would call something but I'm too busy concentrating on the mechanics of the game (be it fighting a 1v1 or rocket jumping) but since I'm on voice activity I can just say it without having to worry about anything. Definitely much easier to be vocal, only downside I've found is that I have to make sure i mute myself when I feel a cough coming so it don't hurt everyone's ears. I guess another downside is if you use blue switches in your keyboard even with a mod mic (used to have a blue snowball which picked up literally everything) its still audible so its helpful to remember to mute yourself before you're typing. The way I got around this was to have it so that when caps lock is on I'm unmuted so that I can type w/o caps lock with my mic muted. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is a main caller for their team and its probably worth at least trying out so long as you don't have tons of background noise or some odd situation like that.
