Taiwan is officially the Republic of China, China is the People's Republic of China. It's not usually considered like that because it'd be way to confusing, but there are technically two different Chinas.

the US doesn't officially recognize Taiwan as a country because China would go bonkers. But there's a One China Policy where both countries agree that there's one state, but they agree to disagree on who's owning which country.
