Greece has been crippled by being forced to join the Eurozone, they have a currency that is valued in a way that benefits Germany/France and it's put their economy in the toilet. They were given huge loans during the boom years and have now been forced into poverty due to repayments during the downturn, and they don't even have control over their own currency to try and improve competitiveness.
The NL also just had a poll where 54% of the population indicated they would be for holding a similar referendum. Marine Le Pen wants the same in France too. There are plenty of people around Europe who don't enjoy being ruled by unelected foreign bureaucrats.
Also yeah, the UK could potentially rejoin the EU in future. It certainly wouldn't happen in the near future though, but it's a possibility if we were to re-apply 20-30 years in the future. There are no laws to stop it.

EmilioEstevezNot at the expense of their own industries they aren't. Also what kind of message would it send, the only reason to stay in the EU is we will punish you if you dare to leave? It proves the leave campaigns point about the EU being an anti-democratic bully.
It won't be spiteful, it won't cost their industries, it sends the message that there will continue to be benefits to membership, it doesn't prove any such points.

"About a fifth of all cars produced in Germany last year, or around 820,000 vehicles, were exported to the UK, making it the single biggest destination by volume."
If you start getting into a trade war and imposing tariffs, how will that not affect sales of European products in the UK.

EmilioEstevezWhat, the idea of democracy and the right to self-determination is not worth a potential few % of growth? I guess Brits just value their freedom more than Canadians.
democracy without informed voters is worthless as a way to make decisions, which, for the record, is what this was. you're not making decisions based on mass informed opinions by that point, you're making decisions based on bullshit and gut feelings

I think they'd take the smaller financial hit of worse trade with the UK than the disaster that the EU disbanding would be.

We can't have a referendum like that, they don't bind our politicians to shit. We had a referendum about the EU constitution, which was rejected in the referendum but we signed anyways.

The British electoral system results in large numbers of people's votes not counting in most routine elections. A referendum is a rare opportunity for your vote to count the same as everyone else's in the country.
