"Players will only be able to modify graphics settings that are available in the Options and Advanced Options menus."
Damn, I liked the look of bad graphics TF2, though I guess I'm probably in the minority.
Also, the Casual MM is BIG. I've had several friends quit tf2 early on bc they get wrecked by pub stompers all day and they get frustrated by it. Matching newbies with other newbies will make the beginning experience much less frustrating

Looks like Eric read my email about it being confusing and not being clear on what was being forced.

It's a sacrifice for the greater good. I just hope they add some much-requested features to the advanced options menu, like transparent viewmodels. I'm fairly certain r_drawviewmodels is already in the Advanced Options menu, too, so that's good.

Hate on it if you will, this is one of the best features of Overwatch. Even the casual quickplay mode still ranks players based on skill and incites some form of a competitive environment, even if it isn't taken as seriously as the actual competitive mode (although of course right now competitive is a joke).
This touches upon something I posted a little while ago regarding Overwatch:
yttriumI don't care if I'm downfragged. You guys really need to man up if you're so scared about someone in your own community putting his heart into something you personally don't like. It doesn't fucking matter if you like it or not, experimentation and competition is what makes this community evolve. Lessons learned from other games can always be applied here.
Valve has been watching and is going to innovate. Good on them.

I think it's a pun since the heavy as the Buffalo steak sandvich and the Pyro has a bunch of matches set up

Only thing I need is r_drawviewmodels being unrestricted. I can't play scout with the scattergun in my face anymore...

From watching the video, besides the heavy, all the red players are doing a victory dance. That might be one of the new taunts

Also:
The MM FaqAttack/Defense maps, stopwatch mode (fastest attacking team wins)

SedosRIP community servers
ya its been a struggle trying to keep mine alive between matchmaking and overwatch and the fact that there's basically no mechanism to fill an empty server other than begging people to join (or neutering the fuck out of it for quickplay)
EDIT: Woa did anybody notice this?
tf2 blog best-of-3 or best-of-5 (higher ranks only)
longer matches for higher ranks confirmed

i'd appreciate not playing my favorite game of all time at 30 fps, hopefully they don't lock commands outside of mm

infinitypls allow dx8 in MM :c
it's a decade and a half old, i agree the game NEEDS optimization but it isn't worth it for valve to drag on compatibility for something people shouldn't even have to be relying on

I just like the look of DX8. I first used it because I liked how it looked, not that I needed too.

if those yellow damage numbers are added i might give up on custom huds and just use stock

Don't get your hopes up about the yellow damage numbers, it seems TF2 Wiki has been using custom damage numbers, 1-year-old videos already had yellow ones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuB3nfyE_PQ)

One of the things I talked to Valve about were DX9/8, and graphics configs. I think they made some really good points that I'll try not to butcher.
First of all, DX8 is *super old*. I know that's obvious, but the main reason that's a problem is that when they add something new, they'll often have to make it work in DX8 too -- which takes up valuable development time. Plus, because DX8 lacks features that DX9 has, it takes longer because they have to come up with a workaround.
Another thing they touched on were graphics configs. From what they said, a lot of graphics configs didn't do what they thought they were doing. One instance they gave me had to do with skins -- when they released skins, people complained that they caused massive hitching on their clients, when they really shouldn't because they're just textures with UV coordinates. They found that everyone complaining about it was running a certain, very obscure cvar that modified something (I forget what). The problem was that changing this cvar gave an average fps boost (via demotime), but it caused hitching whenever a skin's texture had to be uploaded to the GPU.
Basically, a lot of cvars are misunderstood or don't do what people think they do -- and even if they do, a lot of graphics configs are based around average fps as opposed to a smooth FPS with few hitches.
That said they know perf is a problem and they're working on it.

They literally said this publicly a year ago and still haven't done anything. I don't have much faith in them. Unless optimization comes out this update then I don't think it ever will

they honestly should get rid of this need to get a fps config
just give us a slider with interp options
button to disable ragdolls
button to disable gibs
most cfg cvars are accessible with the video options, add a handfull of console commands and tbh i dont think in my opinion ill need a cfg if this is available
