The closest gym near me is across town and one pokestop I visited was at a church I got weird looks when I strolled up there on my phone to just grab some pokeballs and leave. I'm glad there's a park close by that's a stop so I can just hang around there for like an hour and grind.

considering that the rare pokemon always spawn in exactly the same spot (the bins behind aldi netted me 2 onix, a cloyster, a victreebell, and a lapras, none of which have appeared anywhere else at all- why isn't it random) I'm struggling to see what the point is. Once you can't contest gyms there's literally no point in playing really. You can't battle your mates or trade, so that's already worse than what we had on gameboy when we were kids. The spawn system is 100% predictable so finding good pocket monsters isn't even really fun. Apparently it's just been copy pasted from their last game.
Plus the servers are shit so half the time I don't even get my rares. Already missed out on a gengar, slowbro and tentacruel. Obviously that'll be fixed eventually but it's still annoying as hell, and I doubt I'll get back the lucky egg and the incenses that've been swallowed by the server.
So essentially it boils down to grinding the spots where the good pocket monsters spawn so you can control a gym, but why even bother when your gym can just get 2v1d and then you're SOL- and that's on top of your gym losing prestige if someone uses 3 pokemon to defeat one. There's not even any skill involved you just mash the screen as fast as possible. So for me there's no sense of actually being a gym leader, who is supposed to be the best in the area. Though then again that'd just be whoever wants to spend 50 quid on loads of incubators.

niantic is gonna be updating it like every two weeks to fix and add stuff

I was searching for this fucking Horsea in my neighborhood for what seemed like forever. I don't know why it was there, what with no water anywhere around my neighborhood, but I finally got it and I am never transferring it.

the entire point of this being fairly shallow to start off is because it really doesn't need to be complex for now. if it doesn't go anywhere a month from now then it's dying as hard a death as miitomo, but slowly rolling out features as a service-type thing isn't a bad idea when you know 99% of people playing for the first long while won't touch any of it
when you first do anything MMO-like (or, uh, whatever the fuck you call the giant pop culture sprawl that is pokemon go), one of the major problems you have with higher-level features is that if someone gets first past the gate, there's absolutely nobody to do it with. when you set it up like a week-by-week service, however, you can roll out features once you know for sure there's people who can all play with it
the actual big thing, to me, is safety and privacy concerns. this is way too big, and interacts way too hard with the real world for people to not get upset by it. niantic has a fucking treasure trove of location data involving where people are at all times, and given the privacy policy this game has they have free reign over it
