I've never used shadows in tf2 but some of my teammates pointed out the advantages of using them, so I'm probably making the switch. I was just wondering if there is any way to turn on shadows for players only, and leave off shadows for everything else. I'd love to not have shadows generated by the map itself if that's an option.
Let me know if it's possible, thanks.

as far as i know, map shadows are not dynamic and turning on shadows will not affect that.
only players have dynamic shadows and this is what r_shadows 1 turns on

The only reason I know of that shadows give an advantage is due to the glitch where you can see shadows through walls sometimes, which is really lame and should just be fixed by valve in the first place

These are my current settings for shadows. I don't know what the individual commands do but with these settings I still see map shadows and player shadows.
mat_shadowstate 0
r_shadowmaxrendered 0
r_shadowrendertotexture 0

I read from chris' cfg that "r_shadowrendertotexture 0" has to be enabled for player shadows to bleed through walls.

i think shadows should be forced removed, unless they fix where U can see someone trough the wall.

Maps can theoretically be made shadow proof if mappers would just make certain walls thicker. Shadows bleed through thin walls.

I'm pretty sure these are the only two important commands to make it so they work. Make sure to put it to these values before you start your game, because the shadows will be giant blobs if you change them mid-game. However, I don't think there's a way to make it so you can only have player shadows. Even then, you won't confuse any shadow with a player shadow unless you're trying to gain FPS.
And yes, these commands are important for competitive play. There is no reason not to use them.

fuck everyone in this thread there's another advantage I had that slips through my fingers
guess I'll just have to get a triggerbot to get good
