i know this is weird asking this on a tf2 forum, but i looked over a over.gg quickly and someone's already hosting a tournament 10x larger then i58's prizepool was for tf2
could it be the death of comp tf2?

One, that has never been alive, can not die.
Overwatch has had bigger tournaments than TF2 for a while now. This isn't exactly new.
comp overwatch is the best chance good tf2 players are going to get at being able to be professional gamers
Overwatch is pretty fun but not as skillful as TF2, it's a shame that that game's mechanics are the ones that are promoted and hyped due to being new and Blizzard-made. I do think it's quite a good game and I'd rather it be paid attention to than stuff like COD.
As far as players leaving for overwatch, we probably won't see many more top players leaving. There was an element of "i need to leave to play overwatch because this might be my only opportunity to make it big" because the game was new. Now, it's been out for a while, and the top players are somewhat established. B4nny couldn't just decide "I play overwatch now" and be one of the best players in the world. It definitely did hurt the TF2 scene, though.
the overwatch comp scene actually kind of sucks and there's no definitive competitive forum or anything
also, people at masters level ELO are still absolutely awful a lot of the time, and diamond players are like the equivalent of UGC silver players, so laddering is pretty terrible
it's not like dota where you can hop into a 5k+ game and expect people not to be complete shit
also like #10 says most games have some very very toxic people who don't even comm which is extremely offputting
i hate the game but i am happy the competitive scene is full of tf2 players
overwatch matchmaking has one of the most toxic players ive ever experienced which is what strays me away from the game
is it just me or the overwatch numbers of views on twitch are falling pretty significantly ?
is the game still going strong?

the 100k esl atlantic showdown or whatever had like 65k viewers at peak time
Delighted that many of TF2's longest serving players are finally able to earn a living from something closer to their interest.
Otherwise, don't watch it, don't want to watch it, don't want to play it.
I dont' feel anything regarding OW's comp scene, because I never gave a fuck about it. I'm just glad some ex-TF2 players are able to pursue their gaming career thanks to it.

[/quoteHow is there anything wrong with that? In csgo if you are global that still means little to nothing in the grand scheme of comp teams and leagues

all public comp mode games will always include people who will not take the game seriously

csgo has esea pugs
what's wrong is, there isn't really any way to get your name out there in this game, so you're stuck playing awful matchmaking
you have to 6 stack master or you get retards, anything below master seems aids, grandmaster is the only safe space if you are good at the game.
competitive is still at a young stage and being lft is hell because there are bunch of people with good individual skill that broke up from a decent team but won't be picked up because teams that are already top 20 na arent gonna drop any players anytime soon. there are a lot of weekly small tourneys teams play and the most important weekly which is gosugamers. im not sure if eleague is still going on but that is pretty big.
overwatch takes a big brain to be good at competitively at a top level
i mean to be fair tf2's comp scene chance has gone and now with overwatch if it would survive it won't really go huge.
looking over over.gg i saw some big names go to overwatch, which is sad but they're happy I guess, sad to see tf2 won't really be able to launch a big comp scene again
just because they are successful doesn't mean we have to be dead. we can both do our own thing.
Can someone make it so I never seen any threads with "overwatch" in the title
promote and invest in a game a lot and it will be succesful
make a game F2P and it will be less respected
sage78promote and invest in a game a lot and it will be succesful

dota 2/lol or even something like smite??
hearthstone too
tf2 is probably the only widely played f2p game without a large prizepool
high mmr dota pubs are no better than high mmr overwatch. matchmaking has always been awful in any game. this is nothing new.

by making a game F2P i meant making it F2P after having it for sale with a price for years
that was kinda upsetting for some people, but it increased the revenue of the game by 12 times for valve

well then if that's the case, then tf2 is truly a dead game, even if there's class limits implemented or anything like that, it's playerbase will truly never grow unless valve markets heavily into tf2 to make it a large e-sport. :(

You can see completely new players in the Dota 2 and CSGO pro scene along with veterans. It's just a matter of being interested in the game, grinding your way to the top and having good connections.
I don't understand how people can compare the number of players in tf2 to games like cs go, in cs go most of the players that play understand their objective and know what needs to be done regardless of how good they are.
in tf2 I am not even sure half of players that play at any time knows what they are doing, and you can easily see that if you join valve servers.
investing into this game might only bring people that are pub stomping, and are not yet familiar with competitive tf2, which is also rare.
and another thing is that even the people who are familiar with it don't seem to like it because all they care about is why their main class isn't being played more instead of understanding what are the best classes to be used during the game.
making tf2 a successful esports requires an unbelievable amount of resources and time, so that's why valve brings shitty no effort updates just so it will look like they care and want the game to succeed, tf2 was one of the first games with trading on steam and with the steam market implemintation valve are earning a lot of money from tf2 and thus don't feel obligated to change anything about it.
So sad that valve doesn't give a fuck about tf2, I thought overwatch's success would ring some bells.
If valve doesn't REALLY step up their game competitive tf2 is just going to continue it's downhill.
