Does you guys have any tips of good mics?
If you have desk space, a blue snowball ice is a good option if you ever see one on sale. I got mine for about 30 USD.
Just don't play pubs and expect magic quality through TF2's awful codec.

if you just game then either a zalman clip-on or modmic
if you plan on doing a lot of streaming and you hace the desk space, invest in a blue snowball and also probably a pop filter

My friend is offering to buy me a mic for ~30 so I want to get an 'actual' mic that will sit on my desk with a little tri-pod stand or something. If it's sitting about 2 feet away from my face it should still work decently with voice-activated trasmit (per lansky's advice), right? I'm pretty set on this too since I want to be able to mic my amp and maybe record my voice.
yeah, should work fine
if you plan on doing voice recording, look at getting a pop filter, they make sound recorded from desktop mics sounds so much smoother

If you have the money get a blue snowball or yeti or a similar high end mic. Middle price (~$40) mod mic is one of the best, plus you can hook it up to your headset. Zalman Clip On Mic has pretty decent audio quality, good build, and is only ~$10.

only thing you have to watch out for is if you use a mechanical keyboard with loud switches and tend to type quickly
right now I'm using a mod mic and have my keyboard with mx blue switches in my lap (weird desk configuration, no space for kb on it) and it still often times picks up me typing
in the past i've used a blue snowball and the same keyboard both sitting on the desk and the keyboard in the background sounded really annoying
