team fortress classic if you did not know

Tried to play it some with Soapy a couple years ago and got insta killed a lot by people who know how to time nades properly and finally understood why it was removed for TF2.
yes, i used to play high level TFC. a lot of tf2 players came from TFC. there are about 2-3 pubs that are still active but that's about it besides IRC pugs. fortress forever is a mod that was supposed to be kinda the modern day successor but it died out pretty quickly.

Don't hate on grens, though the radius was a touch big :P They're different games, ctf actually works in TFC (and is the best mode), and the nades add a lot of extra dimensions to the way that particular game play(ed) in organized play. Different pacing overall. In TF2 Valve tried to fill the void of what grens accomplished by introducing random crits and ubers, etc.
I still play pickups occassionally in TFC but appreciate both games for what they are.

Yeah, quite a bit. I still play IRC pick-ups (4v4) every two months or so and I think there's a handful of people who actively play them (almost?) daily. If people are interested in watching, probably could drop by #tfc.pickup on QuakeNet or #tfc.invite on GameSurge and ask to watch. Channels look pretty dead for a Saturday night though.
The game was fucking awesome, and pretty much my first source of being exposed to "modding" as well and all sorts of whacky maps. Playing some of Axl's custom TFC maps or just climb (I think they call it kz in CS and maybe other games) maps was pretty awesome outside of organized play in the game.

Hopefully your sample of the game was not purely on a Dustbowl pub or Drippy's 2fort or something. I do agree EMPs/MIRV grenades/frag grenades/nail grenades/concs perhaps made things too chaotic on some maps, but for the most part it was pretty cool on other maps and concs in particular were awesome in my opinion.

Was actually the very first video game I ever played when I was 6. Still my favorite game of all time even though I don't really play it anymore :/
Unless they were shut down recently I think there were two active servers with good maps instead of 24/7 dustbowl/2fort

Yeah, my friends introduced me to it. I remember people raging at me to get off sniper so they could play it.
Not hating on nades, it was just something I had always read about and seen arguments about before I had played the game. When I actually played and saw what they were capable of, (and that you can toss them and use your primary simultaneously) all of that discussion finally clicked and I see why Valve thought they were off putting for new players.
I tried TFC, a lot of the people there just kept talking about their hate for TF2 lol, was interesting to play. I tried Fortress Forever also with a couple of TF2ers to play in the UGC league about 3 years ago, but the format was weird and we died out. You guys remember VinnyTheBoss? He was there playing at the time.
